Feel so sorry for Cliff Goss with the loss of Gold Watch...so sad as he obviously loved the horse and he is a great old guy what a tragic shock...commiserations to all the connections ....and then on the other side of the coin to see the elation of Sam Weatherly and the Weatherly family...just shows all the emotions this game can give in one race.It can be bloody tough some times.

Yes what a tragic day at Ellerslie. with   Gold Watch being euthanised and Danielle Johnston breaking her leg, must admit I shed a tear or two thinking of poor Cliff Goss. He will miss his old friend. And then to make matters worse TV1 Soorts showed the replay of the whole thing tonight. How insensitive can they be. They hardly every give a racing any space but then to show that is absolutely disgusting.. Trackside never replayed it again and we’re very compassionate about the incident.

George Simon couldn't even bring himself to look back at the 200m mark,  I didn't see it, but from George was saying, it wasn't good news.

i see his daugter saying she is very worried about her dad, 90 you can't take many shocks. All thoughts with the poor getleman, i remember  him saying the horse gave him reason to live.

Cliff certainly didn't deserve this, Gold Watch was a very promising Horse that could've easily won a Group 1.  Fingers crossed Cliff will be back at the Races soon.

I have reported this tweet: Im sorry for Gold Watch, who had no choice but to race, he was forced to race, maybe this incident will lighten you and your folks up on how to treat animals, and not sed them as sn object for lucrative purposes... RIP Gold Watch, an inocent creature

I presume the "lucartive purpose" is the reportable part?

Was on course yesterday and heart sunk for Gold Watch, Cliff and Danielle.  Speedy recovery for Danielle please.

How often do you see horse racing on T.V1? On this occasion it was a race, a race in which a jockey was hurt and a horse put down.

A very insensitive effort by T.V1.

I have sent tvnz a message, but haven't heard anything from them.  I pleased that Trackside are refusing to show what happened, am currently watching Weigh In, and they have talked about what happened, but they haven't shown the footage either. As soon as tvnz started talking about the group 1 racing at Ellerslie, I knew what they were going to show, and I immediately changed the channel!

Been waiting to watch the replay as was watching live after a few beers so maybe I missed something, loveracing are seemingly not going to upload it due to obvious reasons.

To me, that looked like a terrible overly aggressive ride from a top rider?   Got blocked for the initial run on the bend, and then got caught in traffic on the home straight and decided best way out was to play dodgems to try make running room into gaps that didn't exist?

As I say, would prefer to have a replay before voicing anything, but anyone else think the same on initial live viewing?    I do hope I'm out of line and incorrect.

I watched a replay on NSW TAB but they took it down and also the Wolverine race as well. The whole race. Yes horse got a bit far back and then not a lot went there way so maybe a little panic might have set in. What did the stooges say? Whoops that’s what comes up if you put stipes

IMO, Premixer you are spot on. That's exactly how I saw it and was concerned just before it happened that the horse was subjected to some less than subtle control. But in slight mitigation there must be huge pressure on jockeys on hot favourites when they end up in very difficult situations.

I believe the Stipes decided everyone blameless in the face of an injured jockey and deceased horse. As an owner and with no particular target in mind, I also think the overall standard of riding in NZ is poor, and the sanctions for misdemeanours are totally inadequate.

P.S--Is Noel Harris still mentoring?

For 90-year-old trainer Cliff Goss the hardest part of a tragic weekend was when his old mate wasn't waiting for him at the stables on Sunday morning.

Goss lost his stable star and perhaps best ever horse when Gold Watch broke down in the feature mile at Ellerslie on Saturday, having to be euthanised on the track.

It was a horror end to the fairytale story of the big chestnut galloper who had helped give Goss purpose after his wife Rae passed away three years ago and it stung when Goss went to the stables on Sunday morning and saw Gold Watch's box empty.

"He usually knows when I am coming down to see him and he used to yell out at me," Goss told the Herald.

"So to go down there and see the box empty was bloody hard."

Goss has been around horses his whole life and like anybody who works with animals knows accidents like Saturday's can happen.

"I feel sorry for the crowd, having to see it," he admits.

"This sort of accident can happen with horses any day of the week so for it to happen in the home straight on a big race is horrible.

"But I don't want anybody saying it happens a lot because I think 165 horses raced there on Saturday and only one of them didn't go home.

"And most race meeting there are no accidents."

Goss says Gold Watch never seemed himself on Saturday, even hours before the race.

"He is usually as quiet as a mouse in the float all the way up but he was kicking and carrying on.

"Then at the races he wasn't himself. We thought it might be the big day and crowds because he hadn't seen a crowd for a while.

"We will never know what happened to him and it is a real shame. And I will miss him."

The pain of the loss, even for a pragmatic lifetime horseman, was eased slightly yesterday by calls and text from all over the world.

"So many people have reached out to me because he really was a horse people loved.

"I have had phone calls and texts from Hong Kong, Singapore, lots from Australia and even one from Switzerland.

"I even had Mark Purdon (champion harness trainer) ring me to tell me how sorry he was to see it and we talked about the horse and racing for 10 minutes.

"I had never spoken to him in my life so when people like that reach out it means a lot."

While Gold Watch, who won six straight races before Saturday's tragedy, was the horse that helped Goss through the toughest time of his life he has no plans to give away training just because he lost his old mate.

After all, Cliff has suffered bigger losses.

"I will keep going," he says.

"I have a Casino Prince filly I am bringing into work and a colt by Iffraaj who I will bring back into work earlier now because I can do two horses.

"In life and racing you can't just look back, there is nothing there for you. You have to look forward."

Check out the ride on Funtonic from J Riddell, race two NYear's Day. Falls out of the gates. Last to turn, starts to make ground. Declines a run up the middle of the track, runs up the back of one, hesitates, waits 50 m, then peels out and goes for it, finished 6/7 lengths off them. I get that horses are set for bigger assignments, but how can that be riding the horse to the best of its abilities?

The issue in NZ is and always has been, that the stipes are too close to the industry as a whole, to hold it to account. Especially now with $$$ pressure left right and centre. But the flipside of it is that running it in such a shonky manner shakes the faith of punters that the game is at all fair.

Final point is that there are blokes running food caravans at the Henderson night markets who know more about keeping people happy and fed, than all the catering at all the tracks in NZ. Hot dog on a stick and some week-old chips, anyone? How can it be that hard?

Rant over, and happy NYear to all!

Animals are extremely intelligent, maybe some unkind person had done something untoward or Gold Watch had had a fright of some kind before been loaded on his float that was unknown about.

There's some not very nice types out there, was there any fireworks let off in the area in the period beforehand that may have impacted on Gold Watch's well being?

The run of Sound in the straight in the Zabeel Classic was definitely a bit weird as well. Goes for gap. Declines it. Fades then cranks up to be just behind them. Worth a dollar or two next start.

Yeah I noted that. I backed Tiptronic - not because I thought he was the best horse, but rather I thought the best horses would wait and allow the leader a cheap mid section. Sure enough, a 2:06 10f! Then they whinge after that it was run too slow?!? It is a race - go faster.

Being at Aussie tracks and watching Jockeys cop it from the crowd, it amazes me how permissively they are let off here.

To be honest the feeling I get when I go to the races (admittedly, not much in last year!), is that they are doing YOU a favour to be one of a 100 at Matamata on a Wednesday in late summer, for example.
