Trackside Presenters

Recommended Posts

I actually think BP is a good presenter, but often feels like he needs to make up for the lack of personality with his team.

We don't need fake laughter. We just need quality information, actual betting advice, and the commentators can stick to their job, and not provide their opinions on who they think will win.

How many punters do you actually think make money? Like profit in the long run? He tips lots of winners so that helps turnover but are you seriously trying to tell me there are several Aussie presenters that will tip their followers into LONG TERM PROFIT?

David Gately for one ,he made consistent long term profits on the last man standing segment for the 3 years prior to his quitting racing .com to join sky ( that is the limit of my knowledge of him) he has many vids on youtube highlighting his  monster collects. The racing.com presenters currently have running totals( some profitable, some not), but at least they have them ,they have no accountability for their tips but they have more credibility.

So one guy you know of ever then. Well done to him. But one guy who either does'nt have the confidence/balls to bet instead of present or has some other reason to tip for free? You think there is some treasure trove of winning punters in NZ looking for trackside work?

Pro punters risk money to make money, which is unlike 99% of jobs.

Appearing on racing shows is a good supplementary income to soften the blow of a losing month.

It's the same reason these punters have websites. Some are subscription based, some are affiliates. Any additional income is welcomed.

Gary Cossey put his name to tips in the friday flash and best bets and was head and shoulders above all others,we were amazed at his ability to pick good priced winners with a very good strike rate,I was a big fan but his talents should have been exploited for a tv or radio audience to share his knowledge  and add a positive  influence for punters .Stu Laing also worked on the flash, was exploited on tv but was nowhere near as good a tipster as Gary.

For what its worth I agree that its a good idea to keep stats on presenters tips and have more betting focussed info. I dont think it would work as well however, without the big panels and better knowledge etc that Aus have. I just dont think in a country like NZ paying the rates Trackside etc does we can expect to have high level presenting quality and expert analysis. Its a highly specialised field and we are drawing from a much more shallow talent pool than Australia. I also think the idea of training these people up is even less realistic when there are so few opportunities for racing journalists OR presenters for full time work, no matter how good they may be. Especially in, dare I say it... a sunset industry. Even if we had these people they would never be fully appreciated by Trackside or the industry and would quickly find greener pastures.

But Stu Laing was the brains as agent behind the Lance O'Sullivan success. Not neccessarily picking winners on tv but e pert in reading  form or horse ability that would suit the LAO style.

I dont want to make it look like I am criticising Stuey, but Gary was had a superior record as racing manager in his own right ,acting for jmac, the Vela brothers and Donna Logan to name a few .Stuey was good but Gary was better.

The decline of the O'Sullivan dynasty had a fair bit to do with that IMO

The whales analysis would be up there with any presenter of any code in Australasia. Not his fault that we have shit pools and people back his horses down. Yes he tips a lot of short odds but as you may have noticed we have a lot of short priced winners too.

He's not a natural presenter but his knowledge, research and analysis makes him one of the best around IMO.

The Whale is very very average, great analyst yes but there is an exponent missing, statistics are only part of the equation, and with him his judgement is obviously astray, because time and time again his tips are raging hot favourites and even then he may get 1 out of 3 on a good day paying $1.50 ..

I think it is high time that Trackside looked at it's model for selecting presenters. NZ Racing would be the only major sporting code not to employ former elite participants in the roles of presenters. Across the Tasman Michael Walker is currently presenting on their racing presentations. Peter Moody was recently employed as well. Their expertise is invaluable in such roles. Francesca Cumani and our own Jayne Ivil ditto. I would like to see Trackside employ former successful participants as presenters. Sure they would need some media training. Suggestions: Michael Coleman and Nigel Tiley in the North. Recently retired Group 1 winning trainer Andrew Campbell in the CD. No reason why recently retired Riccarton trainer Kevin Hughes could not be used at the upcoming Riccarton Carnival. I am sure others could add names of other highly experienced racing people who could do an admirable job as presenters.

What I dont understand is why not on the big days after the NZ races are done for the day why they could not keep one channel for the big races from OZ so you get to see the build up and the after race celebrations..but no we get shit races jammed in from everywhere go to the race 1 min before and then cut away to some shit race that nobody really gives a shit about. How hard is it to be organised to do that...all they think about is stuffing as many shit races down everyones throat as they possibly can...total BS.JMO.

Wasn't it the Banking Industry plonkers who moved from the Finance Sector to the Racing Industry era of International Money Laundering Legislation changes who created this issue?

Who signed off these contracts?

They should be held to accountability

What's the pathway for these racing journalists you speak of? Good luck finding one of them a full-time job.

It's a start to get them trained how to present the overall Racing Product.

Watching and learning from videos of those who we mentioned in our other post would go a long way as those people were knowledgeable, Polished and Professional all rounders who knew about the background of the Horses, owners, jockeys etc, where and how they were trained etc.

Their friendly, good natured personalities encouraged new people to partake in the Racing community.

Mary Mountier, from memory that was her name, was also a pleasure to listen to, spoke eloquently and none of this quick paced cram it in racing commentator speed in presentations.

Other greats like Gai Waterhouse and the late Bart Cummings also spoke in a manner one could enjoy and learn from.

Tell us any " journalist" in general terms who has a full time job, they are few and far between as most these days are Communication Studies / Social Media spokespeople who copy and paste.

Hate to say it but Beer Banter doesn't really encourage people to take an interest, neither does wall to wall racing that should not ever have been introduced on TV or radio or the Internet.

Wall to Wall racing is well known to turn people off the industry.

Right you Stronzo 's if you think you can do a better job than the current Trackside Presenters, why do you put your money where your mouth is, and apply for a job.  Then other people can bag you on websites like this.  IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!!!

What makes you think any of those people would want the job? Especially Tiley and Campbell (the latter of which I dont think would be well suited, despite the fact he was an extremely astute trainer)

The pay is horrific - the hours are terrible, so why would anyone want to be a journo, let alone a racing one. There is no money to be made.

And less employment opportunities every year

Sickopunter Michael Walker was once again very informative in his presenting/comments role at The Valley yesterday. Surely we could duplicate that expertise here even if only at the bigger carnivals or race days. Some of us want more from our presenters than dividends and price changes to be spouted ad nauseam!

What they want is people just good enough to do what they're told, stick to the script and not get fired, without being good enough to get offers to leave. For the most part this is what they have. Hopefully they'll look at bringing in some stronger artillery on the bigger days but I wouldn't hold my breath.
