NZ Horses with passports.....

Recommended Posts

Rarely look at USA Harness other than to check the deeds of Dexter Dunn,

But I see the dozens of exported NZ horses running around Australia with a lot of success and durability.

But today I glanced at Yonkers USA fields and saw a number of ex-Kiwis racing starting with Zach Maguire and Mackintosh who were opposing each other.

Macintosh left NZ in 2013 after a Forbury Park race driven by DDunn and a record of 2 x wins from 10.Now 12 yr old having his 235th start ,dozens of wins and US$682 in stakes.

Zach Maguire had won 5 from 32 in NZ ,now having 155 starts with many wins.

In another race there were 4 ex Kiwis...Millwood Bonnie who left after winning 2 of 5. Poppy Drayton after 4 of 37. Lynbar Rose after 3 from 35  at 5 yr old and Tall Poppy after 5 from 25 as a 5 yr old.

All have won a lot of races.

Also racing was Larry Lincoln who had won 1 from 7 , now 12 from 38.

Also Bill Halley who had won 4 from 32 ,last racing on Manawatu as well as on Taranaki grass circuit plus the Westport Cup.He now won 17 from 80 and US$282 k....like his  Musician namesake he sure has rocked around the Clock !

Its not hard to see where our Intermediate pacers go to and they sure to get to race and remain competitive for well past their useby dates in NZ. .

And considering the South Island appears flush with horses , these exports totally necessary to maintain reasonable numbers .

But the North needs to retain more .

There's just so many races to choose from in each State to race in , any day of the week nearly. WA, QLD and Vic are 6 days a week.

The beautifully bred Bettors Delight horse KIWIS ARE FLYING  (out of KIWI INGEGUITY who won $1/2 mill) was only winning Once a year for Robbie Holmes ?? earned 30k.

KIWIS ARE FLYING won again today to make it 6 out of 7 (+ a 2nd) in Australia, and looks like could go to FFA class. A few more like that come over too.

Just too hard to win in NZ. Those 16 horse fields at Methven last week ???  Too many runners. need a LOT of LUCK to win those even.

(Better to race for half the stakes and have 2 eight horse fields) at least you get 2 winners that way and 2 lots of happy connections. Just not enough races NZ to go in ,is half the problem.

Obviously the Dunn and Allstars camps and now Telfer stable probably just rocket along to fast at Addington for the smaller stable trainers to win much there as well.

HI Tasman Man

You're certainly right about lots of ex Kiwis performing well in the States. But remember many of those have raced first in Australia.

Lincoln Farms' Larry Lincoln won one here before campaigning in Brisbane with Al Barnes where he won another eight races. His new American owners are thrilled with him as he has won three of his seven starts over there.

Lincoln Farms also sold Zach Maguire after he had won five of his 32 NZ starts. He won 11 in Oz before going to the US.

Bill Haley is even more travelled. After winning four of 32 starts in New Zealand he grew a leg in Australia where he won four in Brisbane and four in Perth, half of his 20 starts at Group and Listed level, before being sold to the US.

Cheers Barry,

I checked the NZ starts only .....and took the total numbers off the raceday info on TAB page.

Interesting that these horses still have juice left in them after racing in Australia where the opportunities are prolific !

Easy to see why NZ has so many exports/sales.

Our horses are resilient ,but often have to race out of their class/ability and the cost of racing them far exceeds the rewards possible.

It becomes an expensive hobby.

And our Harness betting can do little to change this equation .

Its grim in the North !

NZ racing is FAR more taxing than the general Australian racing. much more likely to be comfortable here with the Usual mile and mile and 1/4 racing.

NZ has Long distance (lot of draining 2600-2700m races, standing starts that effect horses confidence immensely, and those large fields (making it hard to get win a win from weight of numbers Against you)

Lucky some good Aussie trainers are extracting 'Juice' out of whats left from those, that are arriving from NZ.

Marie Long, 4 wins in 7 (Western Australia )  left NZ as a very handy Maiden. Big chance Gloucester Park tonight.
