Tasman Man, could you (if you can, I mean, without breaking confidences) tell me just how much of the Hill is being sold?

Ellerslie racecourse, where 6ha is to be sold for development. Photo / File

Is it all of the area from the far side of the running rail upwards?

Hi there,

I not privy to any 'inside' info but I did see the ads in paper and on-line by the selling agent CBRE Limited.

Also photos and youtube video online under OneRoof Commercial..

The photos indicate it starts at running rail upwards.

Why haven't the likes of Ellerslie & Avondale Racecourse not had Grazing Contracts for sheep, horses and cattle in recent years to be sustainable and help the ecological systems, as they did in years gone by?

See attached  link

it would be better for the environment and also helps create an awareness and respect for animals and career opportunities.

It's beyond belief that City Racing Clubs have not undertaken this initiative in recent years.

Has a cost feasibility investigation ever been undertaken?
If not, why not?
If so, when was the last one undertaken and why hasn't it been followed up on?

There are those within the Racing industry who have such animals that could easily be Grazing these Racecourses and breaking down barriers as well as Educating City children and folk who so need these aspects in their lives to learn from and understand animals.

New Zealand is a country that is blessed to have green pastures available in it's cities to do this.

In the UK and a number of other countries there is still grazing in City Parks and projects in place encouraging it.

There's plenty of information about these sustainable practices online

Auckland Racing Club Annual General Meeting with Accounts, from 1904

The industry needs to see where things have gone awol in recent years, compare notes with what's on your accounts today compared with then.

Look at where we can make changes and look at adjusting to the frugal practices of how those before us all did in much harsher times than today.

Note this is prior to World War 1 but circa of the likes of the Boer War era.

Meanwhile, over in the UK they are so desperate for Green spaces the Westminster Council have spent around 2 million pounds making a Mound where there was a vacant section so people can have a Green space, with a view over the area.

Be careful what one aims for.

Alas  when dealing with some Councils they have good and bad eggs in them just like other places.

Deloitte are very much in the pocket of Auckland Council to the point they need to be investigated for Bribery and Corruption offences.

Now Auckland Racing Club based at Ellerslie, together with Deloitte, CBRE, Oceania Retirement Villages and the like would never ever desecrate such land, nor contemplate selling it off, nor would Auckland Council give Resource consent to build houses or other such buildings that requires significant soil and earth movement, would they knowing such circumstances?

So Chapman Tripp are advising ARC on the sale of the Knoll/ Hill at Ellerslie Racecourse.

Was it disclosed to all members, and that of the wider Society who have the rights to use this Racecourse Reserve, prior to voting and proceeding with the sale of this Public Recreational Reserve and merger of Clubs with Counties Race Club that Doug Alderslade, Director at Auckland Racing Club is a long standing Partner with Chapman Tripp?

Was it also disclosed that Chapman Tripp represent Oceania Healthcare who have an "interest" that is a Potential Conflict of Interest amongst other legalities, in acquiring this Public Reserve land for a Retirement type village complex?

From 2003, what's really changed over the years for the positive ?
Where has all the money gone to?

Where are the women representatives on the Board?

Is it because of the sexist leanings towards women that has previously been known to exist in Society, and within the Racing industry that women don't feel welcome to step forward for these roles?

Is it because the traditional attractions of women to Racing, including enjoying the Gardens at Ellerslie which have all but disappeared, that they no longer feel a valued part of Racing?

Or is it because of previously mentioned dysfunction within the Board, as was raised in 2003?
Why is there an imbalance of Legal and Real Estate related people on the Board?

Where is the representation from locals who are part of grass roots community who live and work with children, who used to attend the Races and use the Racecourse for Sporting and other recreational activities?

Bouncy Castles by the way are not what children who used to attend the Racecourse undertook, they took part in real sporting activities on and off the track, including competitive Cross Country races over the Jumps including the WATER Jump.

Bring those activities back and you will get Racing back on track

Below are links to the people all mentioned in this article from on Chapman Tripp's website

Where is there Promotions and Marketing background skills in Racing?

Why is there such an imbalance of power and control given to Chapman Tripp?

It all appears to be about Acquisitions and Selling of our Assets and putting the Racing industry and economy into Deeper debt and a black hole which is not how the Racing industry used to be, nor does any of the advice appear to include the much needed Promotions of Racing

Which of these people were involved in earlier sales of Ellerslie Racecourse Reserve Lands?

What shareholdings in Oceanic Healthcare or CBRE do they have?
Were those shareholding, if they have them, disclosed?

Once again, this is all about Selling off of ASSETS  by those in the Legal Profession who appear to have ZILCH skills or expertise in the Marketing and Promotions of the Racing industry to attract new patrons and lure back those who have disappeared.

Once again there is short-sighted poor decision making by those who are not legally qualified in the Promotion and Marketing related fields, nor do they appear to have much, if any knowledge about how to attract the wider Society to become Patrons at the Racecourse Reserves.

It's time for all communications between those at Auckland Racing Club, Deloitte, Oceania and CBRE to be disclosed and heads to roll.

Where have all these Botanicals gone to, including the Mummy Apple/ Paw Paw grown from a seed plant by Edwin Mitchelson, who without others we would not have a Racecourse, or Races named after him?

We hardly ever see Paw Paw's and flowers in and around Auckland these days which ties in back to the era of Auckland Council's daft decision =-making to only allow Native Plants to be planted.

Clearly some have lost the plot why we need a variety of species in our lives.

Auckland Racing Club used to supply the plants that graced our Boroughs.

Auckland Racing Club, if they were exercising 'Common sense' would have and could have been employing Gardeners that they could have profited from the sale of Plants grown in their Glasshouses.

The Glass Houses, of what remain, are this year 100 years old.

They must be restored and brought back to the glory they once were in like they are currently doing to Exhibition Hall Gardens, also known as the Summer and Winter Houses at Auckland Domain, also a Recreation Reserve of importance for the people of New Zealand.

Get off your backsides Auckland and it's Racing Club and get your act into gear.

Reach out to the contractors who are working on the restoration project at the Exhibition Hall Gardens, they are a friendly bunch.

There are plenty of people who are looking for and need jobs who lost jobs in this current "CLIMATE CHANGE" we are all going through around the world!!!

As a mainlander I can answer your question re the Botanical Gardens.

They are at Manurewa....64 marvellous hectares of Botanical gardens.

I also recall the  'famous' Ellerslie Flower show which moved to Christchurch !

At the Ellerslie trials earlier this week I was impressed with the Ellerslie facility and gardens , very appropriate for a race course.

The nearby Parnell Rose gardens and Cornwall Park with its mighty trees and grazing livestock great for the City. Cornwall Park quite unique.

No one seems to know too much about the kids cross country races over the waterjump....was that early last century ?

Meomy you havent answered the question over your membership of the various Auckland racing Clubs and your contribution to the Clubs and questions you ask their AGM's.

Or your solution to trying to sustain Racing into the future , in particular improving returns to participants /owners.

For those who may not be conversant with the history Ellerslie Racecourse, along with surrounding areas, has always been on low lying Lava Caves that flood, hence why it was set aside for a Racecourse Reserve/ Domain and not housing etc.

Lake St John, also known as Waiatarua was drained a number of years ago and much of that land is prone to ongoing flood plane issues to this day.

Let commonsense, as they used in Superintendent Robert Graham's era, prevail and leave well alone.

Do remember it was those associated with the wider Retirement / Aged Care industry, including Property Speculators in the 1980's/ 1990's, that failed to factor into account the area where Lake St John was/ is, is  prone to flooding what's now called Remuera Gardens Retirement complex a stones throw from Ellerslie Racecourse land.

Information that surfaced subsequent, and prior to, that development would have seen that complex never to have received Consent.

No amount of "Drainage" of the land will ever stop water flowing through underground Lava Caves... as those who live and work in the Ellerslie Region know and understand (Thank you to all those who are now sadly deceased, ( including the wonderful Norm, Trevor,  Clarry and Gladys and family who worked alongside Robert Graham and others) and those of you in advancing years who have passed on your Wisdom over the years passed through the generations for your useful insight on our travels)

One to this day knows there's flooding / drainage issues in the area when it rains heavily.

I think we all know about the Healthy Waters Plans and that of Auckland's Water shortages, all of which incidentally have come about through covering up Natural Water Bores/ Springs with concrete..

In a Nutshell, a similar situation arose in Caufield, Victoria, Australia where the Council tried to take Racecourse land in 1909

They were not permitted to interfere with the Racing, or Training Track.

It's the whole History of Racing that one must factor into account, including why Race days over the whole year are named and Sponsored by those that they are, who they are named after,  the links to local areas in and around each Racecourse - note street and road names associated with families of those who have contributed to what Racing is to this day, the associated Holidays - including what we today have as Queens Birthday in June and will no doubt revert to Kings Birthday when Queen Elizabeth passes on, unless we have another Queen as our Head of State.

Is it really a wise idea to mess with what is tried and true?

Do you recall what year the Trainers all left Ellerslie Racecourse @tasman man ?

Perhaps that's an era we all need to look back on and see if it coincided with a negative impact on Horse Racing in general terms and Merging of Borough Councils with Auckland City Council/ Regional Council and their decision-makers and hold them to account for any damage to the Racing industry.

Whilst those Botanic Gardens you mention are wonderful, when they are looked after, they are insufficient Domains/ Outdoor Reserves for an ever increasing and over populated Auckland and that of New Zealand.

Auckland stupidly because of Peter Haynes ( Mt Albert Local Board) and co no longer have animals on their Volcanic Domains despite having been advised by Legal Counsel to keep them (we were passed on that info first hand).

One has to ask, what role did he have, if any, in ensuring No Horses etc  are Trained and Grazing on Racecourses??

Under the old Borough Councils, every what we now call, suburbs had an area of Open Space set aside for Botanical Gardens and Outdoor recreation, that was well maintained by Gardeners and Cattle, not tractors and machinery.

We will source the town plan information for Ellerslie to give those who may be interested an insight into the foresight and wisdom those from the 1800's had and what they factored into account for our Betterment.

@tasman man

Have the Auckland Racing Clubs, and those around New Zealand, ever had any assistance from ATEED or Tourism New Zealand to promote Racing?

We recall when George Hickton was around there was some Promotions undertaken that encouraged people into attending Racing.

The key to lifting stakes is to get people back into Racing and on course.

There has been a disproportionate focus on Digital aspects over and above in the flesh human and animal interactions, the later which is what life and living is about.

One needs people of all ages and walks of life back on course, and with most of us stuck on the islands with Shaun Hendy and co #NoFlying, we haven't heard any planes fly overhead yet today in Auckland, what better opportunity to lure people back on course?

It's more logical to defer any plans to put in an AWT and sell off assets whilst we are in the 'Climate Change' imposed on us all.

Why effectively shoot Racing in the foot and shut down Racing in a Major City like Auckland when people have time on their hands and are looking for something to do?

There is no better opportunity than now to openly Market and Promote Racing in Auckland to those who may not have ever seen, let alone experienced up close and personal outing with our animals.

Lure the children with horses grazed back on our City Racecourses and they will lure their parents/ guardians and that is how you attract Sponsors to the Races and increase stakes.

We have seen and often experience the attraction of a dog been seen by one or two children who may not have seen a Dog before in the City and next there's a whole group of Children around... Horses are no different. ..

Alas you must ensure all the local schools are involved at child level..

It all goes hand in hand

Cross Country Champion of New Zealand J.W. Savidan was in The Mitchelson Cup Steeplechase race around Ellerslie in 1929.

With interest in Olympic Games, what better timing to bring back Cross Country events on all Racecourses to encourage community involvement, on Racedays.

Reach out to Spartan Events and local farmers who in recent years have rallied together for Mental Health and get those who live in your local regions involved, indeed, come on in George Simon...

Cross country running races were often held at racecourses and some still are.

I used to watch a neighbour Pat Sidon ,a NZ rep ,win the Edmund Cup at Wingatui racecourse and that event is still run today ...no hill on the course but they used to run over the road and through some elevated farm land with the start and finish on racecourse !

Pat Sidon won the event 11 times.

In an earlier era Empire games champ Harold Nelson won the Edmund cup 7 times.

Pat Sidon also won a race at Riccarton racecourse.

I doubt ATEED could justify spending money on promoting on-course attendance at NZ race tracks ,or trying to get Aucklanders to embrace horses !

Thousands visit Ellerslie daily now but not to watch horses....they go to carpark, visit hospital, practise golf, walk , car market, Circus /Shakespeare[fin] School balls and conferences/meetings !

Why has no one factored into account that the nearby to Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, St Cuthbert's school girls, who have and love horse, raised around 500k for Riding for the Disabled who would love to be able to ride their horses and graze them at Ellerslie Racecourse?

Was there ever any mention in any Reports written by Deloitte and their contracted out 'Consultants'  of these Community focused groups and their needs for Racecourse Reserve land 'Access", including that of the Knoll/ hill area which is sheltered by Trees that have been there for over 100 years and others seeded from originals planted on the Racecourse by those who did the hard yards in the Nursery to encourage people into Horticulture related careers, and that of horse related careers - notably flat, jumps equestrian or Riding for Disabled?

If not, why not?

These groups should all have been included as part of any 'Consultations' and Decision making processes as they are "Our Auckland" future generations who may choose and are influenced to taking up Horse related for pleasure  or careers.

Some are very environmentally aware of the lack of quality usable what is now more commonly called Greenfields in the city and the need for horses to have a hill to ride along...

In fact the absence of Horses and Cattle in Auckland is a huge reason for the problems we now face as a Society.
