Awapuni Racecourse has received government funding for new synthetic turf.

Awapuni Racecourse has received government funding for new synthetic turf.

Police are investigating after more than $600,000 of government money meant for a new racetrack in Palmerston North ended up in the wrong bank account.

In 2020, Race Inc, the umbrella grouping of the Manawatū, Marton, Feilding, Rangitīkei, Ōtaki and Wellington racing clubs, received a $10.5m provincial development grant for a synthetic racing track at Awapuni racecourse.

Work on the new track is due to start in October and finish in 2022.

In recent months, one of the first instalments paid by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s provincial development unit, Kānoa, went astray, with about $600,000 landing in a bank account not connected with Race Inc.

MBIE confirmed on Friday a third-party recipient of funding had “potentially been the subject of attempted fraud”.

“The matter has been referred to police. As this is an ongoing police investigation, we can’t provide further comment,” a spokeswoman said.

The chair of the Race Inc board, Paul Humphries, said the missing money would not affect the new development.

He was unclear about the status of the police investigation, but confirmed the money had been paid to the wrong bank account.

Police confirmed they were aware of the matter and investigating.

Only 600k of workers hard earned tax dollars,  no need to panic .

Surely the problem here is the 600k gone west not Martin VB

The trouble here is the inside leak to a very bitter journalist - plus KDT the $600k has not gone west - they know the account recipient.

Maybe a govt staff member cannot read or is part of the bank accounts owner team and nothing to do with racing - as they say inside job by govt dept employee .

The racing mud raking by MYB continues with no facts or selective facts - how about asking - was the collector of $600 k involved in racing at a high level or opportunist ?

Sorry KDT I agree with you totally.

point I was trying to make was the direct line this bloke has to racing’s dirtiest secrets.

There is probably much more to this story and quite amazing there have been no follow-ups?

No worries Grit. Like any good journalist he will have his contacts. The worry here is that Joe and Jane public just see this as another reason to stay away from racing and who could blame them. This needs to get sorted and I would have to say that all 3 codes need to clean their act up or these stories will just keep getting published, as they should be I might add.

Hi Kdt, the three codes might not have any role in this.  This maybe purely a MBIE mistake, ie MBIE paid an account that was not race inc's.

That would be great if it turns out this way but I suspect there may be more to it.
