stodge 1,940 Report post Posted June 1, 2021 Very interesting piece about UK prize money compared to other racing jurisdictions: https://www.racingpost.com/news/insight/prize-money-how-do-other-nations-fund-such-bigger-pots-than-britain/491643 It's worth some discussion I think and perhaps where NZ compares to other countries. This is the graphic that tells the story: soliloquy
Nerula 1,402 Report post Posted June 1, 2021 I presume the lower level of AUS and GB is due to Bookmakers siphon. In the US states such as Kentucky own the "product" pari mutual betting and stream to other states Insider
pogo(aus) 876 Report post Posted June 1, 2021 with regard to (aus) i thought it might be all betfairs fault as a matter of interest how many metro races would a horse have to win yearly in NZ to cover its yearly training fees ( based on city training rates) ? Leggy 4,076 Report post Posted June 1, 2021 That graph is the percentage of total betting turnover that is done on racing. It doesn't necessarily reflect the relative return to racing does it? JJ Flash

Say at Ellerslie 3 wins in 22.5k races would cover it I reckon. Trainer 75 a day and agist 26 a day. then there are the expenses. Mattski 176 Report post Posted June 5, 2021 Interesting graph and article thanks. What % of betting is returned to racing in NZ?? Is this a reminder that we should retain ownership of the TAB? Thank, Matt
brownboy 19 Report post Posted June 28, 2021 Why waste your time in NZ Brisbane races on Friday at Ipswich the stake moneys is between 20k and 30k which is the same as country Queensland meetings, and good regional trainers are 80 a day and its similar in regional Victoria. So why race here and if the horse is any good Metro racing Brisbane stakes are 50k to 80k a race outside of premier days. Unless the Stakes improve across the ditch is a better option Huey and We're Doomed
Shad 1,554 Report post Posted June 28, 2021 What's the average cost of flying a horse over to Australia Baz (NZ)
stodge 1,940 Report post Posted June 28, 2021 3 hours ago, Shad said: What's the average cost of flying a horse over to Australia I wonder how it compares with flying horses from the UK to Ireland or France and vice versa. I believe since the UK left the EU, there's much more paperwork and consequently the cost has risen. British racehorses are also flown to America, Australia and Dubai and I can't imagine that's cheap.
