My late father Brian Hazelton Sullivan took up racehorse training in Matamata in 1948 on Mangawhero Road  and was successful with a number of horses over the years.

Whynot, Sonnetary, Rabaul, Crimson King (won the Wellington Cup in 1953) to mention just a few.

His apprentice jockey Sonny Haitana also enjoyed success.

Dad trained horses for Hughie McCarvill, The Hon. Stan Goosman, the Corbett family among others,

Kind regards

Geraldine Merrylees.

Mannix was sired by Gigantic, and was trained at Te Awamutu.

In the subdivision of part of Hughie McCarvill's farm Bridie Street goes off Tower Road and Tashi Street and Mannix Place run off Bridie Street.

Tax law students can read about Mannix in Case A13 (1974) 1 NZTC 60,098; 5 NZTBR Case 36, 336.

Crimson King's win was prior to cassette tapes, video players etc.  Brian Sullivan got a 78 rpm record made of the Wellington Cup commentary and insisted that everybody he met listen to it.
