Dont forget George Cruickshank.

I was trying to recall some prominent Southland names from back in the day.

Many of my favourites at Forbury in lesser races were from mid Canterbury.....Orari ,Hinds, Metven

Eg Sam Henderson with Seafield horses

WE Lowe...Pun,Wag,Urrual, Humphrey ,Atanui ,Lyndhurst ,Grouse.

TM May...Palestine , Walk Away ,Royal Walk, Walk Alone , Stroll Away [roan]...and Trotter TASMAN who often started off long marks.

DG McCormick...Charlie Wood [raced as trotter and pacer] and other Wood horses.

My dad loved GD Shand...a battling front running driver

CMclaughlan......Allakasam ,Manarawu, Royal Ascot ,Manaroa [with rats tail]....all Cup horses !...

I taught at Central Southland College in 1968 and 1969. Many happy memories and would have enjoyed staying on but it was a long way to go to see family in Reefton and Christchurch so we moved back up the island.

One of the very first essays that I marked was all about a horse called Poupette. The writer, a third-form lass,

ended her story by writing that Poupette had won the Inter-Dominion Trotting Final and "that was what had made Winton famous".

20/20.
