definite chance and very game in the Guineas, Gruff..

my query on him is whether he has enough 'miles' in his legs for 2400m next week ...only 1 start beyond 1600m - Milford is already a winner over 2100m at Ellerslie in Jan (Gingernuts Salver)

I thought the most revealing aspect of all this was that in all the media reports about major events affected by the lockdown I have never once seen the Derby mentioned. I thought it was quite a major event in Auckland. Looks like only about a doz horses going around this year anyhow so it could be moved to a smaller track somewhere.

yes, spare a thought for everyone in the industry affected by this Gummit decision ..its not just one race! ...lots of business gets done over the carnival. Is it viable to run the Derby on Cup Day instead?

When would flights to Australia be for maybe a few of field . Would a week delay affect those . A double header Cup and Derby with a crowd would be awesome but Ellerslie would have to be pretty confident it going ahead . You could put it off a week and who knows what restrictions in place it's so unpredictable  , if it's canned no Derby would not be flash . Put it this way I wouldn't be planning anothing important with cash up front like a  wedding for example this side of mid 2022 as you could be in the cack for thousands.

There are other group races on Derby Day also.

Level 3 restrictions are at this stage until 6am Sunday morning.

If they drop to Level 2 from 6am next Sunday then they could run Derby Day on the Sunday. Under level 2 it would be behind closed doors and under level 1 open entry.

If no further significant new community cases then there is the likelihood of level going down.

Big risk Ted for out of town horses like the 2nd favourite from Otaki. Not much time to take the horse to the races if an announcement at 6am to drop to Level 2 on Sunday. Horse racing isn't only for the benefit of Northern horses.

Obviously the announcement to drop levels would be made in days prior so wouldn't be made the night before. I am sure there would also be a plan B in case they stay in level 3.

PS. Not the first time the Derby has been transferred to the Sunday. 2009 Coniston Bluebird

That horse went better than Bluebird on Coniston did all those years ago .

Given this strain of the virus has a longer incubation period before people are testing postive (up to 5 days),  reducing the Level 3 restriction after the initial 7 day period appears a forlorn hope. This assumes EVERYONE who is a close contact or casual plus contact has a test within the next 48 hours (and stay at home which, given the recent scenario we can assume is unlikely to happen), and they all test negative. Unless this happens, lifting Level 3 after 7 appears a long shot. And the government advised that the latest employer support will be calclated bi-weekly, which also implies they anticipate it be longer than 7 days. Beng an employer involved in the accommodation industry I can tell you any level above 1 is a blow to business on top of our border closures

Just announced:

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and the Auckland Racing Club (ARC) held discussions this morning regarding the impact of last night's announcement that Auckland was moving back into Covid Alert Level 3 for seven days.

Of primary concern to the racing industry is the Group One Vodafone New Zealand Derby, which was due to be run at Ellerslie on Saturday, 6 March.  Under the current status with Auckland at Alert Level 3 and the remainder of the country at Alert Level 2 the meeting is unable to be held at Ellerslie on that day.

NZTR and the ARC's preferred solution is to move the Vodafone New Zealand Derby meeting to Sunday, 7 March in the hope that Auckland would move back to Alert Level 2 at the end of the seven-day period announced by the government.

"While this is the 'best case' scenario, it is by no means a certainty," NZTR CEO Bernard Saundry said.  "We are continuing to work through different options should indications be that Auckland will not come out of Alert Level 3 at that time.   Our focus, and that of the ARC, is to ensure that the country's blue riband event for our three-year-olds goes ahead.  Two World Wars failed to see the New Zealand Derby stopped and we are determined that covid won't either."

"There are a couple of options we are considering in conjunction with our stakeholders and we are all focused on making the best of the cards we have been dealt,” he said.

ARC CEO Paul Wilcox agreed that the focus must be on making any change work for stakeholders.

“Our priority is to ensure horses and trainers do not have their planned programmes unduly impacted. In what is a tricky situation running the Derby on Sunday is the best course of action, we have plans in place should that not eventuate but we are hoping we do not need to activate these,” he said.

With the ARC unable to race on Saturday 6 March the meeting scheduled for Awapuni on Friday, 5 March will move to the following day to provide two race meetings on Saturday.   NZTR is also continuing to work with Hawke’s Bay Racing Incorporated (3 March) and Otago RC (6 March) to determine they have protocols in place for racing under Alert Level 2

The govt is totally gun-shy now after getting some flak about moving quickly back to level 1 last time. They were at fault for not checking on the 10 or so contacts who didn't respond to calls, but at the end of the day it came down to one thicko who didn't obey the rules. So this time there is no way they will move back a level earlier than seven days. Although there is no reason for the rest of the country to stay at level two for seven days.

There is probably no reason why the Derby can't be scheduled for next Sunday with the venue to be confirmed; either Ellerslie or Te Aroha. Tricky for catering I know, but at level 2 not much catering would be needed anyhow. Given results over the next few days you would think an announcement should be forthcoming by Thur at the latest; although to be honest this Govt is more about their PR image than anything else.

what brasses me off most is that between them the two health 'authorities' had sent the non-responding 'close contacts' a letter - so they had a PHYSICAL ADDRESS - but nobody thought it a good idea under these urgent circumstances to knock on their flocking door!

You would think they would learn from this experience, but we have thought that several times before.

The whole situation has been  disproportionate and unbalanced all the way through.

It's a New Zealand summer when people should be outdoors enjoying the sunshine, getting healthy to see themselves fit & full of Vitamin D to see through winter free of illnesses.

We are  on the world such a short time so should be loving life & socialising.

Society doesn't repose in isolation.

Bloomfield must be held to account, as needs to be Politicians & Academics who have failed to adhere to basic Laws.

Ardern & her Advisors aren't fit for office or  they would be looking at the bigger picture.

Funnily she goes on about "Saving lives" just like those in Tobacco industry did/ do with giving up Smoking telling people to take up using e-ciggs & vapes which are far more toxic & also kill lives.

Bloomfield who was in the thick of that era has been decidedly SILENT  on Synthetic drug / Tobacco DEATHS, Why????

Wow, speak for yourself @drewandjo, unlike some we are realistic in life and factor into account the wider economy as is required by those in Public Health and unlike your Green Party
