See attached link of MP Chloe Swarbricks Facebook..  updated just today saying that she is turning her attention to greyhound racing, she has a lot of profile/push, add that to the current left leaning/ cancel culture society we live in and the end is nigh.... 😬

The end has been nigh since I started in greyhounds. Remember what they did in N.S.W., I don't think any govt want a repeat of that.

The Greens are not in govt, I never voted for them and never will as their thoughts on greyhounds were made crystal clear before the election.

What annoys me the most is that as a breed of dog we would be the most regulated in N.Z., all information regarding greys is recorded. Now say you have a white fluffy tennis ball that people seems to love there is no restriction on any type of breeding of any other kind of breed in N.Z.

My family friend has one of the above mentioned white fluffy things and its had 3 litters, first litter $600 pup, second $1200 pup, last litter $1800 pup which apparently can reach $3k a pup.

No issue that she has breed from but the litter sister of that bitch owned by someone else was breed at 9 months of age which is just wrong. Point been anyone can breed anything whenever they want and I'm 100% sure there is a large amount of wastage from this.

I personally think for greyhound racing in N.Z. and continuation of this great sport, over breeding by a small amount of breeders needs to be seriously looked at and dealt to with restrictions and loop holes covered.

Next thing we will have to ban any sports where humans get hurt or worse, Cricket will be banned asap. I hate seeing any animal hurt, or any type of cruelty, and it's a very small percentage that ruin it for others. But we all know greyhounds love running, and we aren't riding them with whips either.

Hope you're right Lad , however I just don't see the same widespread societal,  political and 'cultural' support and push back from the NZ public in support of Greyhound racing like the Aussies did..

Other interesting thing is the anti gambling angle that seems to be a target recently,  not just wastage and injuries but "gambling is so bad for society let's ban it". Covid showed alot of otherwise ignorant people the extent to which gambling makes the world go around...and they didn't like it..

I do not believe Chloe has the support to progress her bill, despite the SPCA and Safe aiding and abetting. Her intention is to present a private members bill which means she does not have the backing of her party. There is a growing pushback against the NZ cancel culture. Farmers, Hunting and Fishing, Harness, Thoroughbreds, and the racing community, to name a few are sick to death of the constant attacks by this group of vegan vultures. That is a substantial proportion of the Kiwi population.

"At least eight members' bills awaiting first reading must be on the Order Paper on each members' day. When a space on the Order Paper becomes available, a ballot is held to decide which members' bill(s) will be introduced. Members enter bills in the ballot by lodging notices of proposal with the House Office and providing a copy of the proposed bill. This can be done on any working day. The proposed bill is then posted on the website and members can publicly indicate their support for the bill prior to the ballot. If 61 or more non-executive members indicate support for a member’s bill, the bill will be introduced without needing to be selected through the ballot."
That means if all 10 Greens support her bill, she needs cross party support from 51 other members. That makes her task very difficult.

"Very few members’ bills become law, with most not passing the first reading stage. Approximately 30 to 40 new members’ bills are introduced in each Parliament, with another 15 to 20 usually reinstated from the previous Parliament." There are many steps to overcome if a bill makes it past the first reading, including public submissions.

The anti racing protest held tonight at Hatrick raceway was by all accounts a roaring success. The report just in estimates protester numbers between 4-5. The reporter qualified that statement by adding, the 5th possible protester may have just been dropping off a flask of soy milo. That remains unconfirmed.

There was an excellent article in the SST March 7 about the rehoming of Smash Attack (ex Malcolm Grant) now known as Andrew de Dog and enjoying retirement at Stanford House in Whanganui.

Well worth a read but after all the good news there are words of caution from an unnamed SPCA spokeswoman. .She outlines why the animal welfare organisation is opposed to greyhound racing including "a lack of socialisation".

She says the SPCA acknowledges the steps GRNZ has made to educate their members about the importance of socialisation and re-homing.

"   ...   "further action is needed   ...   It (the SPCA) The SPCA would like to sere a veterinarian present at racetracks   ...   "

Fear not, greyhounds are protected and cared for

This is the headline to an article in yesterday's SST written by Jim Edwards, Independent Chairman of the GRNZ Health and Welfare Committee.

I hope someone else more tech-savvy than I might be able to produce a link to  the piece which is on page 23 of Focus

As well as the credentials listed above, the writer is a retired veterinarian, an ONZM, former president of the NZ Veterinary Assn and the World Veterinary Assn.

This a no-nonsense but well balanced and clearly expressed article.

Two quotes:  "The concerns expressed by the SPCA and SAFE indicate a lack of current knowledge as the fears they have raised are many years out of date. For instance the SPCA says it wants a veterinarian to be present at all race meetings, but this has been mandatory for more than 30 years."

"GRNZ accepts that there will always be those who do not support the racing of animals and want it banned. They are entitled to this belief, but it is important when opposing any activity that the true picture is acknowledged and misinformation  is corrected."

Have you come across the splendid article on the GRNZ website Home page.

"The Duke's Incredible Link to NZ Greyhound Racing" - .put together by Michael Dore with input from Mark Rosanowski/and the late Sam Fletcher's book.

A must-read  Quite remarkable. Two photos as well.

The Duke's words when Royal Commission won the Silver Collar are very special. Check them out.

I had noted on Facebook a photo of one of the Duke's greyhounds in England and winner of many races, including some biggies.
