It's not easy getting the right balance between providing a secure environment in which racing can take place and ensuring it's a enjoyable and relaxing day out for those spending a day at the races.

Over here, there is a problem at tracks which cross public land such as Epsom and York. At those venues, the public has every right to use the land in the middle of the racetrack but can only cross the course for example at designated points under direction on race days. Even during Covid, we've seen people on the outside of tracks watching the racing but as they are on public land not the racecourse there's nothing the track can do - drones are another aspect of this.

Marshals face the crowd rather than the races to ensure we don't get objects thrown on to the track or people trying to trespass (for that's what it is legally). The other "challenges" are dogs getting loose from walkers on the adjoining land and at one or two tracks (Newcastle), deer trying to get on the track. Now, there's only so much you can do about the latter but the former can be addressed by reminding dog walkers to keep dogs on leads near racehorses.

I'm afraid drink is and can be a big problem in terms of crowd control - there have been well-documented instances of fights at Ascot, Goodwood, Newbury and elsewhere. Societal attitudes to alcohol are one part of this - I doubt there would be much support for "dry" racecourses but we have for instance a ban on taking glasses outside - it has to be plastic containers.

Some of the worst behaviour is in the corporate boxes but apart from the noise that isn't really an issue.

I have heard some colourful language directed at a few jockeys in my time - I witnessed one incident at Lingfield when a senior jockey who was a tad over-confident on an odds-on favourite and got chinned on the post had to be escorted by security from the unsaddling enclosure to the weighing -in room as he was in danger of being lynched by an angry mob of punters.

There is a limited on-site Police presence at most meetings - the courses have to pay for that and not all of them do.

Those Northampton and plastic Don's ( MK Dons what a joke club ) players didn't cover themselves in glory few years ago at Cheltenham in corporate box , Sami Currather's went from pissing in a glass in public view to Hemel Hampstead Town  in a few short moves , at 27 years old HH Town ain't where you want to be so he got his beans , his mate very very lucky he didn't hit the wrong person when he poured his urine  over the edge of corporate box . Hit the wrong person  and it's big trouble for a fool like him  . Anyway glad both their career's gone no where relevant.

Did I read that correctly?  The maximum monetary penalty that lout can incur is a lousy $200.

You sure did a maximum of 12 months in the big house and a maximum fine of 200

Heaven forbid it is a fine only outcome, surely not

I recently got lightened 185 for a minor speeding ticket on an empty highway,

The clown has to be banned from all public events for 10 years as well as a tax paid holiday

Slap the clown

His FB page says he’s from the UK so presumably not a resident here

A plane from Wellington to  Wellington then  , let's call it a scenic flight with direction for him to look down to where not to walk when 12 horses are galloping at full flight .

Wellington Race Group chairman Paul Humphries said close to 12,000 people were enjoying the Cup Day at the time.

"The horses can shy, go through the running rail and when you've got jockeys on top of horses going 60km/h, it's just madness."

The jockeys had to quickly steer away and came just inches from trampling Bergman as he stood in the middle of the track.

Inches?

INCHES?

I thought you Racing types went metric back in the early Seventies!

That last para should really run:

The jockeys had to quickly steer away and came just multiples of 2.54 centimetres from trampling Bergman as he stood in the middle of the track.

No way he would have escaped with such a minimal sentence if John Tannahill (Rumpole) was still with us and on the job.

Lets hope NZTR appeals. One has to wonder at the standard of legal representation many lawyers offer their clients in court. The cost to racing is huge. Extra security will now be needed to avoid copy cats. What about the jockeys? If jockey safety is not worth even one dollar potential jockeys will be put off if their lives don't matter.

He has offered to repay at $100 a week, this being the geezer who said on Facebook he was cashed up and dudnt care what they threw at him

3 clowns did this at Cranbourne when the race was on 100s of metres away and got a lifetime ban from all Victoria race courses, the way it should be for this muppet

Suspect he may pay the first one, then go "missing" like most of the miscreants who thumb their nose at the law. NZTR need to ban him for life.
