shaneMcAlister 1,420 Report post Posted January 26, 2021 There are 15 horses on minimum weiigh of 53kgs!!! WWith a ratings spread of 22 points, 11 kgs!! That means 10 horses are racing outside their handicap. The Thorndon has a superstar in it, and a cracking horse in Rock on Wood, then it gets thin for this class of a race. And if you have a 4yo maiden then you have to wait 2 weeks for 1200 maiden at Matamata (and watch the entries for that). We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted January 26, 2021 Are there some sort of special conditions for the Cup? It certainly bears no resemblance to a traditional handicap spread. I think the original top weight was the South Islander who didn't pay up. Very sensible too, no way he could have given weight to all those on the minimum. napier
shaneMcAlister 1,420 Report post Posted January 26, 2021 We have a significant lack of open class horses. There is a log jam of horses rated bwlow 65. If the horse is any good it is generally sold or sent overseas after a win (or before). You can not carry on racing horses for $4.5K (winners percentage of $10 race less jockey and trainers %). We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted January 27, 2021 It's not as if there is a superstar in the race who has compressed the weights. The top weight has only won $207,000. The second to top weight has only won 3 races and $120,000. Masetto on 53.5 has won 3 races and $92,000. They all have to give weight to two NZ Cup winners in Dee and Gee and Dragon Storm who are both on the minimum and have won $409,000 and $209,000 respectively. Strange old handicap. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted January 30, 2021 Waisake was a “Special” after its last runaway win and drop in weights for the Cup. Jockey gets 10/10 for a fantastic ride and do the horse justice. She can be very proud of that one! JJ Flash, Patiti and ADM 2

Most places do , not sure why that wouldn't have happened .Sometimes there's the dodge with those rules whereby stable has top weight, then scratches out late for some reason leaving those at bottom out the weights and stable mate sitting pretty on nice weight . Is it a straight handicap or SWP race? Or some mixed version of the two?

Red Rum 1,833 Report post Posted February 3, 2021 3 hours ago, Houlahan's Dream said: Is it a straight handicap or SWP race? Or some mixed version of the two? Without reading the conditions fully it might be like Melb Cup , top weight in that minimum top weight 57kgs and work backwards, the Grand National at Aintree is another variation , top is 74 kgs 11st 10 and no more and move backwards from that , so as soon as the top weight pulls out they all move up . So Beauden would probably have been above the minimum top weight and next probably on the minimum top weight. I'd assume if next one came out at final dec they would have shuffled up to a minimum top weight.
