Just 39 pacers and 37 trotters at Auckland this Friday.  Not great for the club. But why the contrasting treatment of trotters and pacers? Five pacing races (all mobiles) and 3 larger trotting races (all stands). Surely given the small numbers the pacers should be having hcp standing start races just like the trotters? The 4 horse gift race for On the Cards is an embarassment. Given the shortage of horses up north is unlikely to improve in the near future, I suggest the northern clubs take a consultative approach and organise a workshop with trainers to develop a new more flexible way of programming races that caters for all classes and gaits fairly and doesn't get owners annoyed.

Same shite ....different day.

Who cares......and who trying to improve things ?

The race programme was published some weeks ago ,no race for On The Cards who nominates anyway !

Cos of 2 x others outside the ratings ,the club after noms close states 5 x acceptors needed for the race.....One ,Eagle Watch does not accept so they decide to run a  4 horse event...tp please who ?

But only 8 noms for non-win pacers....the trainers letting the club down here IMO.

Of course 40 Northern [Waikato north] horses went to Manawatu and many raced both nights.

This pathetic race card just emphasises the shortage of horses in North ,the sales continue but the so called collaboration with trainers and between Northern clubs is BS it appears !

Agree its a joke they run with a 4 horse after it was said the wouldn’t run with less than 5. But it is clearly the trainers fault mainly due to the fact they think can’t compete . A lot of trainers seem to only line up once in a blue moon yet they’ll go workout week after week. It’s almost as if they won’t line up incase they run down the track or owners getting angry they aren’t winning but a lot of the time owners just want the chance to race and can understand that the horses aren’t always going to win but there’s always chance to win money if your in the field.  Trainers need to stop worrying so much about there personal udr or look and  line horses for their owners to see them race. For a lot of owners it’s not so much about the money it’s the excitement of having one race

A bit different from the South, fields while being a bit average at best al least have good numbers, how long can northern racing stay going at this level?

That is why I think we need to come up with a new concept for putting together fields in the north. For instance, trainers know the capabilities of their horses and what type of race best suits them at any particular time. With the power of computing there could be a preference tick box approach to nominations and the best fit feilds pop out. OK some weeks a horse won't get a start as the trainer said standing starts were out. But if knowledgable trainers were closely involved in the development of such a computerized field selection programme, we may end up with more interesting racing and fairer field selections. We'd still need to programme in advance for target races (e.g. group, junior drivers, juvenile) but a computerized system should be able to manage these nominations/fields too.

What I don't understand is how the clubs are bias to the pacers. When they are short of horses they make up the races with trotters, but when they have plenty of horses they make up the extra races with pacing races. The small owners like myself now bred trotters as I think (and maybe other small owners)we  can compete against the bigger stables.

Apart from their mile night, it is also the same old boring ATC programming (all mobiles for pacers and squeeze the trotters into hcps). At least Cambridge is mixing things up with 3 mobile trots tentatively programmed at their next meeting. Gives many trotters a better chance to get away and get a good time. We trotting owners breed for speed but to win our horses must 1st learn to stand! Pacing owners (and punters) don't have that challenge.

R40 trotters in a mobile against (say) R65's not really a good idea is it?

There is a very similar number and rating distribution of local pacers and trotters racing at Auckland. Why treat either gait differently? If all the R trotters get stuck in 2 hcp races one night and pacers spread out over 4, why shouldn't the reverse happen on another night with all the pacers stuck in 2 hcp races and the trotters spread out over 4 mobiles?

A scintillating night tonight

8 races mainly small fields

Turbo pick 6 with Addington - wont help either meetinh imo

First race (4 horses) not until 6.26

Last race (now 6 horses) 9.56

Competition - Cricket at Eden Park 7 p.m.

I know there's a lot of red tape in the racing set up but wouldn't Auckland have been better to have run on Thursday or Saturday or Sunday or even a 2.30 start today?

Does anyone care eljay ?

Good Friday sales for next few days.....money will be scarce !

Ellerslie racing tomorrow followed by Rugby final....Auckland v Tasman.....Free Admission !

I note the Meal/ Dining packages have gone up at the Park , but similar to some retailers for Black Friday promotion ,the club offering a 15 % discount on these up and including big December 31 st meeting.

The Marketing and and promotion arm of ATC cranking up.

Re the Rugby final tomorrow .....not so long ago Nelson was one of worst sides in NZ ,Marlborough not much better but had held the Ranfurly shield  briefly back in 1970's.

Both were doomed for extinction but both had good schoolboy talent who left for cities once 18 !

They didn't like each other......Marlborough had assets ,Nelson had more players and they were basically forced to MERGE or die !

It wasn't easy .......Nelson got to host several World Cup games [thanks to Quakes] plus a team ,Italy and this resulted in a significant Ground upgrade.

And the city and Cricket got off their bums and they now host Cricket internationals.

Racing has continued to decline there.

Go Tasman.....fins UP !

Tasman are example of what can be achieved through compromise, the success of the rugby team has raised the whole profile of the area, who would have thought the All Blacks would play a test there?

Back to back is poor programming that benefits neither club.  On the other hand, with feature races making up much of the Auckland cards over the next few meetings, Cambridge is catering for many who would otherwise miss out.

70 nominations for this week, bigger stakes but if there ain't no horses they still wont turn up.

I knows supposed to be premier night but there not enough premier horse around so they need to adjust races they programme. Just wanting  elite horses on these night is fine but their  fields and race nights suffer
