Manawatu - First meeting of the season

Recommended Posts

Just a week till the nominations for the beginning of the harness season in the Central Districts.         Let's hope the club are very well supported by the N.I. Trainers.      The industry cannot afford (IMO) to lose this venue - and in fact lose all the other day country meetings the "we know better" executive deem.       Surely the answer to the problem is not wholesale shut downs.      The national bodies have to be convinced that perhaps they are a contributing factor to the problem by for instance allocating unsuitable dates for these once or twice a year meetings    Surely the just completed  Kaikoura with it's big crowds bears witness.    Let's support Manawatu by nominating horses, attending, and if this can't be achieved at least throw a bob or two on the tote.   Good luck to Manawatu.

But Mike is right in that respect.      Many Clubs are hamstrung by the authorities by allocating them dates that have already been discarded in the rubbish bin.       Why cannot they utilise Sundays in the north - surely it would be better than two week days.   Perhaps Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evenings (or even twilight 4 pm start)

Gee thanks for the moral support eljay,I dont like to seem negative, sometimes  one needs to be a realist,it is a hard one this one,Manawatu,it seems some of the suits dont want harness south of Cambridge, didn't even want harness from Oamaru to Winton, except for the new year at Central, they just basically want replica racing as in same old week in week out,Invercargill in the South,Addington, and the 2 Northern tracks,is that good, probably not but unless these clubs get a fairer go nought will change.

Forbury raced on Sunday at labour weekend, was a good crowd by all accounts, will those cold thursday in june or july do the same, probably not so in Forburys case why not have those Sunday meetings in winter instead of Addington,do Addington really need all those Sundays?

If Manawatu are to continue then they need clear windows to race as in being the main focus and in reality there is no reason why a proper central circuit even once a month with Taranaki on the way in or the way out,why Hawera got the boot is a odd one, next week will be interesting to see how things stack up.

Strange how Forbury and Manawatu had close to 40 meetings combined 2 seasons ago,if  some of the suits had have had their way it would have now been zero, that's not really positive in my way of thinking.

Just to add Manawatu have 3 day meetings, next week and 2 nights in mid Drcember, that meeting is between two fridays at Auckland,so in theory no reason why they cant get a fair bite of the cherry, then they have 4 mini meetings, that will be interesting then 2 days in late march, now the 2nd one of those is on April 1,thursday before Easter, but it clashes with Addington ,same time,be fair to say Addington will run a low key meeting, should they make way to allow Manawatu to get the best turnover, simple question.

Trying to have a serious discussion here Lloyd and you spoil things by being so bloody sensible. You and I both know the dates committee have no idea of what local demographics might be utilised to make a successful meeting. Fought the same things for many years in Northland but any pleas simply fall on deaf ears.

Fields for tomorrow are no worse than what's been dished up at Cambridge so far this season, some support from the House  stable and a good number of locals as well shows life ain't over yet, maybe those mini meetings they are going to run later on might be just the thing to keep the industry alive in the CD,maybe less full meetings might help as well, they were getting up to about 16 or 18 meetings before lockdown, support might be ok 3 times a year, maybe a case for running some races on some of those Sunday industry gallop meetings  like they do at New Year,

Good fields, good stakes, and real sponsors. Good on everyone involved. Some of the centralisation fanatics will hate it.

Good to see the Wairarapa Cup up for grabs.

Well they are certainly no worse than any other of these type meetings that have been going round lately.

Over 50 local horses involved is a big positive, if the place was kicked in to touch where would they be?

I was gunna do a count, thanks for doing it for me,with those numbers those mini meetings might be the way forward, time will tell.

I wonder if the money spent on gambling, sponsors income and F and B will cover costs of the meeting. I hope so but its up to all the harness supporters to see that it does as we are surely moving to a use it lose it model

Hrnz had no idea there were no  comments beside horses names for Manawatu. " oh we will look into that" was the reply

They are more interested in doing undercover work trying to catch unsuspecting license  holders.

Can the sport be taken to a lower level? Disappointing.
