Racing Minister

Recommended Posts

New Deputy PM and Finance Minister Grant Robertson has also been appointed Racing Minister by Jacinda Ardern. Interesting that once again we have the Deputy PM as the Racing Minister. A positive appointment in my view. What do others think?

Up to racing to make sure we're not at the bottom of the pile .

Exactly, nomates.

Brand new Minister, brand new opportunity for the industry as a whole (not just the Winston-voting, and funding, breeders) to get together and form a consensus as to where they'd like to see things happen/change in the next three years.

So as, like, the new Minister at least knows what folk (other, as I say, than the Winston-voting, and funding, breeders) want.

Will that happen?

On my observations, No...

At least for once we have a minister who is not clueless and lost at the back of the cabinet , or only really appeared when an election was on the horizon . This guy appears a step up on the last 20 years . It's now up to our " leadership " to show some and start a relationship with this guy . We need to work with this minister and show him we're not a basket case , give him a positive plan for the future and how we see the Govt supporting it , and show that they are not the numpty's that at present is the image they portray .

I don't really see what part the government is supposed to play in it?

No but at times the government does need to be supportive of industry's  going through bad times, things can and do happen, this year of all years illustrate that.

I totally agree , leave us to it , we can make enough mess on our own . But if you have to have a M for R then this one is a significant upgrade on the last few , for the reasons stated above . Now if someone with common sense and a great nous for racing can get in his ear then we might see some progress . Personally i would not let any of the current bunch in the same room , i'm sure they are not held in high regard by Govt anyway , could only make things worse . IMO .

I agree it is bizarre but probably makes no diffeernce for racing in the overall scheme of things.

Why do we need a Minister of Racing ?.....is there a Minister of Lotto ?

Probably should just sit under Minister of Internal Affairs...or Sport.

Now it so closely aligned to Sport , under GR , it ill be easier to justify a greater payout of surpluses to Sport .

Betting figures support it !

Harness should be worried.

Great to see the 'new' TAB agency so prominently placed in the Viaduct.....should be heaving tomorrow !

Stack em high and watch em fly !

Interesting that point is made in Acts racing policy too:

"ACT does not believe New Zealand needs a Minister of Racing and we would abolish the role. The Racing Minister’s responsibilities would transfer to the Minister of Internal Affairs, as was the case pre-1991. The role of government in racing should be minimised, with its primary responsibility to issue the betting license to TAB NZ through the Department of Internal Affairs."

Might help a bit with the very govt like structure at the Tab too. It certainly used to be far too top heavy with admin type roles imo.

Essentially what they say here:

"The racing industry should be administered by democratically-elected boards with sound racing knowledge and be free of both the government appointees and corporate interference that has been detrimental to the industry."

The most important race in Canada is the Queen's Plate.  If we could get the new racing minister and his spouse to turn up to present the prize we could have the Queens' Plate.

Evil, Tauhei!

Of course, the 'Queen's Plate', Canada's most important race as you say, is called the 'King's Plate' in years when the rear end sitting on the British throne ain't female!

Been to Woodbine, incidentally: it's hard to not like a track where in your first betting foray your Win selection bolts home (like by 15 lengths), your Quinella comes in  too and, yay, a decent roughie fills the First Three out to give you a collect you ain't gonna have a losing day from!

[Plus there was a nifty casino at the back of the stand to have Blackjack and Roulette escapades in Racing 'downtime'...]

And a little known fact - the great Secretariat had his final race start at Woodbine...

God help New Zealand all around.

Minister of Covid formed, really?

Minister of Foreign Affairs? Yet NO international travel & borders screwed over bc of "Scientists" telling Politicians what to do & say.

I'm surprised she/ they haven't come up with a Minister of Science/ Physics.

Governments/ Parliament world wide need a good clean out of the rubbish that's infiltrated them & get back to what they  were set up for & intended.

It's overdue some intelligent legal fraternity members stepped up and helped us as Politicians are failing to perform there required obligations - dig out those Red Books from when it was set up, apparently there's a good & informative one out there from the early 1900's.

Look in places like Australia where they cleaned out whole local Councils for Corrupt practices & have been  sent to jail, and in the UK a few years ago they got rid of a few to.

The people of NZ need to start to speak up, we have the Governor General, British High Commission & others who one can write to to seek change & accountability.

The world needs balanced leaders not narcissists or family members of now dead accountants who were jailed for fraud running our public purse finances.

It took 10 yrs before Grant Robertson's accountant father was caught & sent through systems to jail remember.

Would trust him in charge of zilch & definitely not our Sport of Kings & Queens of Horse Racing.

The Labour Gvt & associates fudged up Horse Racing when Helen Clark was  in Parliament, ooops that's right, she's still there running the s**t show & aiming for NZ to be United Nations One Govt for the World like they talked about in the 1930's with Miss Ardern as "President".

meomy I find your post disgraceful and offensive. I am not a Labour supporter or voter but you seem to be suffering from a terminal case of sour grapes. Bringing in Grant Robertson’s father into your argument is a low blow. I suggest you take a sheet of A4 paper and write down the achievements of the two last National Racing Ministers Nathan Guy and David Bennett. I suggest that after an hour the sheet would still be blank.

Heavens you guys are slow. Look at what the Racing Act turned into. Realise that sports betting is the best way to fund sports. Understand how that model works under the new Racing Act, and work out who would be best to control that. Add to the fact that racing has now got a $70m monkey from the government in the way of a financial instrument organised by a now banished Minister Winnie and dove tail that to treasury. Make sure that a finance driven model is inserted into the game to ensure monies are paid back...add to that the issues with racing becoming persona non grata with the animal rights lobby groups and you've got what....

The Minister looking after us is a Minister of Finance and the Minister for Sports.
