always an interesting debate in racing what feeds the industry??

is it the breeders?

is it the owners?

is it the punter?

Breeders they are addicts , all 3 groups are equally addicted,  racing is an addiction why else would  breeders pay service fees that ensure most will never return a profit .

Owners , addicts again the returns from a useful horse won't make a profit ,  racing for 10K is bad enough but even worse the winners today gets $5400 they used to get 7K

Punters yep you guessed it Addiction

All 3 groups have the same problem it's the only explanation that makes any sense .

Bargain priced horses are always the best. Another example - Rothfire, fave for the big Sydney races. Cost $10k but the Nigerians scammed the first $10k so Heathcote paid twice. Still $20k. Takeover Target, Black Caviar, the list goes on. Back to the topic - it’s the Punter. That’s where “all” the $ comes from. Without the punter there is no racing and that’s why NZ racing is bad - it’s a closed shop. It will never work because there are not enough big punters in NZ.

Agree, big fan of the punters , look after the punters and the sport looks after itself.

Well it makes sense. The money for racing can only come from one main source - punting. That’s why State Govts in Australia reduced their take in order for the Industry to flourish. Those that decided to milk the bookies (eg South Aust) suffered. If NZ can get the TAB to be competitive and do some marketing and promotion it might have a chance. Racing Qld will soon have Metro Racing on Free-to-Air TV for 52 weeks of the year. They have dedicated Radio Stations (Radio TAB), good form guides avail at Newsagents, incl Best Bets our on Thursday’s, plus tipping sheets in TAB’s and any number of PubTabs. It is promoted so as to attract the punter. The Breeders cannot sustain racing. There’s no money for the Industry - it stays with the Breeder. So 100% focus has to be on the Punter. Attract, nuture, reward, be competitive. Simple.

So why restrict the winning ones?

Most time in gambling the house wins, big winners mostly become big losers, some defy the odds.

like a  guy said to me a few weeks back

punting   wouldn't  happen if   nothing to bet on

end the day thats why i like owning in aus  ( as a owner   you can  get stable incentive prices   through tabs n book makers   if you stable has a    promotion with them  not like   here in nz  if  every man and there dog backs it and lets  face it with so many platforms it only takes  1k  to get  it to fav in  most  midweek  venues    as a punting owner it annoys   you

Why indeed? Tom Waterhouse has videos on you tube recounting tales of his days as a bookie( from a long line of bookies) and one story stuck out to me was that of all the MILLIONS of punters he dealt with could only think of 6, yes six that were regular consistent winners , so they really have nothing to be scared of, no real reason to restrict any punter other than the fact they are gutless. They are in the gambling business but too scared to risk anything , too scared to take anyone on for a short term loss and they are losing the long game as a result.

In reality with so many losers that would offset winners so why bother restricting

I just fact checked myself and watched the youtube interview of Tom Waterhouse and he said as CEO of William Hill he had 1million plus customers and 12 winners not 6 but he never refused them , at worst he would restrict bets only from those 12 and lay off with other bookies, knowing that the "losers" would more than compensate. His family have had a reputation as fearless punters/ bookies and he is cut from the same cloth.
