17 Races Avondale and Otaki

Recommended Posts

Looking at the weekend Wanganui and TeRapa have 3yo races with big stakes by nz standards, why on same day?Wingatui sunday have some good races, the southern area is holding up well in numbers,I see in the plan that they are wanting to reduce racedays in the south,an article I read a while ago had Kelvin Tyler wanting more days not less, stating that reducing days he might become a hobby trainer,I think just at present the one meet in canterbury one week then one southern the next seems to be going ok.

mikenz ,were you around recently when the TAB basically went bankrupt ...unable to pay debts and no reserves.

In recent years the TAB paid out more to the codes than they were making...and splashed out on new betting platform.

Much discussion took place on how stakes depend on betting numbers.

At $10 k minimum for gallops this takes $80 - $100 k to hold a meeting plus all operation costs of running the TAB.....some $200mill.

Hence in recent years gallops clubs have been receiving bulk funding per meetings to pay for stakes and operational costs

eg in 2019 gallops TAB paid $73 mil to clubs who paid out $56 mil in stakes. Some would be charged back to TAB from clubs.

Do the rough math.

Margins to TAB have been shrinking with FO and sport. Say 10% ++.

Racing started up on a prayer and hope ...a lot of uncertainty and little cash.

Its not pretty , thats my guess.

Only a few clubs have reserves ,as in CASH .

Money solves a lot of problems !

T'man--imagine the reserves if this ridiculous betting platform had not been purchased. Ah, that's right the mongrel bureaucracy would have depleted those reserves with gouging salaries. A loss either way so as the left leaning autocracy tells us in the land of fearful sheep " sit down and shut up"!

Well it is true that they can only payout based on what comes in,so why for instance the big difference in stakes say at Avondale tommorow and the big race days on saturday are the turnovers much difference?  Or are the midweek clubs being cut short for the bigger meetings

It's history now but they were optimistically waiting on the windfall of 'changes.....the Racefield legislation , reduction in Gambling duty and  a Point of Consumption Fee.

A mythical $20 million,...they waited ,hoped ,waited ....even spent it !

But alas......

If you interested and haven't already ,read the Annual reports of NZRB/RITA and note the optimism oozing out.

Once the bank loan was drawn down and Co-vid arrived ...it was all over.

IMO the race dates/programmes etc need a real overhaul...of course Saturdays and Holidays often up against big Australian tracks but more marketing and promotion needed with NZ racing.

The brand of " NZ Racing" has weakened significantly ...........hardly Rugby, racing and beer these days !

It does make one wonder why they want to close the Gore track, now the trots are gone, for now ,maybe forever,Gore is actually a track that should be used more, its away from the coast(better weather) and it's not too far from Wingatui and is kind of central in the scheme of things, probably some more racing could be in Cental Otago as well, good climate and a growing population, still lots of potential for southern racing to grow really, harness racing has probably reached its limit in number of meetings.
