Midweek racing /Radio

Over the last few years I’ve enjoyed putting on the Bluetooth headphones and listening to radio Trackside as I work . Coppins, Peter Early, trainers insights to the day’s and weekends racing, CD track spies reports ,Kneebones northern tips.Des Coppins Sunday show and Monday Reviews all gone . Feels like they’ve removed part of the sole of this great sport .As a result of the crude changes I don’t bet during the week now and don’t listen to anything racing apart from Saturday’s  .Not the only one I bet .

Yes bring back traditional radio Trackside.

Listening to any radio station on a mobile device wears out ones batteries to.

At least with an ordinary radio one can take it outside, turn the volume to a sound one can hear it inside and outside.

Mobile ph devices it's definitely not the done thing.

Wake up Racing industry.

Has anyone considered organising a Change.org petition to ensure the return of Radio Trackside  on Traditional Radio along with Free to Air TV coverage so the wider community can have a say to?

we hear people from time to time ring other talk back stations from time to time saying they "Used to listen to Radio Trackside" but it's  at the moment not here for us.

that petition would be an  excellent profile builder and platform for relaunch of RaceForm publication. New editor Liz Whelan can make a name for herself by leading the charge.

Where does Bernard Saundry stand on Trackside Radio?  He at least should have made a statement and demanded a full breakdown of the costing.  In turn the guts of the costings should have been disclosed to participants and interested parties.

The return of Trackside Radio should be a priority for RITA. Bernard Saundry has quoted that it cost $2 million annually to run. More redundancies of senior staff and paring back overseas soirées to the bone could easily fund the reinstatement. In the meantime you can access the audio of TV Trackside by downloading the Rova or Simple Radio Apps.

I heard him say it is a 2 million loss to run, not sure how they can actually put a figure on it because how do they know how many people are betting/not betting because of the radio. I know my midweek spending is down, as I have heard others say.

$2 million doesn't sound an insurmountable obstacle, Has anyone factored in the value of skill base around radio all now lost. Partnering with various advertisers could have been an option. Racing has to get rid of its reliance on the gambling dollar and start thinking the way most businesses have to.

I use to love trackside radio, since it's gone I dont follow races as much,I dont go out of my way to watch tv and I dont want to be married to a cell phone, radio is so handy.

Myself included....lost interest because it's just too hard ! 😡  More barriers, blockades and obstacles to make racing inaccessible to the masses seems the mentality of the suits running ruining NZ Racing.

All in the name of cost cutting to prevent insolvency!
Shame they didn't use the same philosophy before spending $50,000,000 and the ongoing $17,000,000 per year maintenance costs on the dog TAB web-site betting platform. 🤬

i haven't had a bet since trackside radio went off air. Go to the Casino every week now instead and spend my punting money there. Tab didn't want me and i don't need them . They certainly know how to get rid of their customers. Only a matter of time before they fuck racing completely.

I will say I'm still interested but just not following as much these days,I use to listen to radio most afternoons, now  I just miss a lot of the races  as a result of no radio.watch tv simply when I'm around.smartphones aren't always reliable when it comes to coverage.

Here you go. It's just like being at the races.

Congratulations Andre

There are numerous individuals, organizations able to advance the popularity of racing.

What is required is NZTR change their ways i.e. rather than them alone doing things instead encourage, guide even join together those various outside efforts.  Makes economic sense as well.

2 million annual isn’t it ? Be nice to have the racing back on the radio a lot user friendly when at work and not having items on or in your ears and worrying about your ph going flat constantly.Ohhh the simplicity of the radio .

The practical reality of NZ is there are numerous dead mobile coverage areas across the country which make phone simulcasting rubbish. I was listening to trackside travelling from Auckland to Hamilton late yesterday arvo when at the 400 mark in race 10 from Wingatui I lost signal going down the Bombay’s. A 1 min dead patch meant I had to pull over to look at the result & fuck around reconnecting my phone to the channel. Unlike Australia much of our racing fan base is located in rural/provincial NZ with 1-2 bars the norm on cell signal strength, add in the need to transit distances frequently and you have a large % who can’t be bothered with the extra hassle.

We don’t need to cater for the 500 who listened to Des on a Sunday, but surely some thought for simulcasting trackside to the AM network can take place.
Racing is doing its best to remove itself from the public eye almost completely, no simulcast radio removes it from the 10% of the population whom care.

As you say radio has been an integral part of racing for probably 70years.

I remember the 1&2YA days then ZB, Radio Pacific etc. Then tell me why some non racing upstart at RITA decides Radio must go. No consultation, reorganization no nothing. $2M is not huge deficit to overcome with better management. Where is Saundry? Surely he should be putting forward a case.

Its obvious RITA are trying to kill NZ racing. Why on a Saturday on a day with plenty NZ and Australian racing when you check for upcoming races on the website you only get the following MOHAWK, EVANGELINE, CHARLES TOWN, NORTHFIELD, DEL MAR, THE MEADOWLANDS. Thats not in the morning but afternoon when NZ and Australia in full swing. I doubt anywhere in USA you get all those nondescript betting options. Then we move on to Japan & Korea. I haven't met one person yet who knows about just one horse in these locations. Possibly in the early hours a few may be interested in UK racing so the TAB often knocks UK on the head.

Just a random thought. Since no radio trackside I have had Magic Talk tuned in to my radio on the car. I noticed yesterday it appears there is no Saturday afternoon live show but a recording playing of parts of shows during the week. Could a station like this be used as somewhere to host a Saturday afternoon racing show, I would imagine it would be in the stations best interest as it would have new listeners tuning in?
