crustyngrizzly 1,700 Report post Posted July 10, 2020 I see a death notice for a Russell John Campbell aged 94.in Cambridge. Anybody know if he was the trainer of Fairfleet and a host of other good gallopers at Matamata?.Tom Jones may have been another good horse he trained. Blue 1,095 Report post Posted July 10, 2020 Fairfleet probably his best Crusty, though Shifnal Chief won three for him before being sold to a client of Jack Winder. crustyngrizzly and Black Kirrama

gubellini 3,993 Report post Posted July 12, 2020 Chris Wood Cyril Beechey trained Analight to win the 1975 Caulfield Cup. Russell and his co owner Reg Durrant sent her to Cyril in August of that year to train her for the big events. crustyngrizzly and Chris Wood 1
gubellini 3,993 Report post Posted July 12, 2020 Russell Campbell started training in Rotorua before moving to Matamata. His first winner was Miss Hiawatha at Te Aroha on the 25/11/50. He also trained the very good mare Bellota who won the 1973 Ladies’ Mile, the 1974 South Auckland Breeders’ Plate and Rotorua Travelodge Stakes and the 1975 Foxbridge Plate and Avondale Cup. He also trained Neat who won five races at three and ran second to Young Ida in the 1972 Great Northern Oaks.
