Turd taxis are back in Wellington, after a sewerage pipe burst in the CBD.

Work was under way on Friday morning to repair the pipe after it spilled waste across the footpath and road in front of Wellington Central Police Station on Victoria St on Thursday night.

An update from Wellington Water on Friday afternoon said the pipe was being excavated, and the burst had been found, with hopes to repair it on Saturday.

"It is a 300mm, cast iron pipe, that records show was installed in 1961. We are currently planning to replace two six-metre sections of pipe with new, concrete-lined steel, which is a more resilient material.

"All going well we hope to complete the repair today, with full reinstatement completed tomorrow (Saturday)."

A Stuff video journalist at the site was told the pipes were at peak flow on Friday morning.

Trucks that ferry the wastewater, dubbed 'turd taxis' by some locals, were at the site to suck it up before it heads into the harbour.

"Normal wastewater flows have been managed by the use of sucker trucks transferring wastewater from the nearby pumping station to a point further along the wastewater network, and by diverting flow into another wastewater pipe in Wakefield Street," the update says.

"More visual inspections were carried out along the waterfront this morning, with no visible signs of a discharge."

Water quality testing will continue, and warning signs would remain in place until given the all clear by Regional Public Health.

Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said the burst pipe had lifted a small section of road immediately where the eruption was.

A small amount of sewage had leaked into the Wellington Harbour as a result of the incident, less than 10 cubic metres, MacLean said.

The pipe is partially covered in thick concrete and workers are cutting through this today.

Warning signs would be set up, telling people to stay away from the Frank Kitts Park Lagoon and the inner-harbour area, MacLean said.

Wellington Water spokesman Alexander van Paassen said the burst was contained on Thursday night.

Wellington has already spent months battling sewer problems, and only recently fixed a break in the CBD on Willis St.

Capital ratepayers also forked out nearly $100,000 a day to ferry the wastewater by truck after the 1.8 kilometre-long Mt Albert sewer pipe - which runs between the Moa Point treatment plant and the Southern landfill - failed in January.

But on Sunday, Wellington Water said the last truck left the city after German specialists installed a liner on the Mt Albert pipe.
