Gizzy gone

Reading this gives a little understanding why it had to close and this probably goes for others as well . SO MUCH FOR  , these clubs cost the industry nothing , clearly RUBBISH .

" It was a blow for the turf club, says president Rod Young and one that they cannot really fight. The club will be allocated a racing day in Hawke's Bay. "

" There will be savings in racing in Hawke's Bay, Rod says . HB Racing will assist by doing the accounting , It cost $120,000 to run the meeting in Gisborne. The club had to pay bills like hiring buses to bring totalisator workers here. It also paid an enticement fee for trainers to bring their horses here. Insurance cost $38,000 and there was also the power bill."

It reads like the club will be much  better off racing at Hastings so bring it on .

It does seem a lot of money to run 1 day and in reality it makes sense to use some other tracks more, maybe Wairoa could have stayed however it's gone too

You have been very critical of track closures .......if you gather the facts re costs to the industry ,especially the TAB , the picture becomes clearer.

Several clubs have been very prudent and built up nice nesteggs/cash reserves over the years.

Poverty Bay ,it appears , has some $2 million in cash and Investments .WOW !

Another point of interest is IMO.....a lot of clubs are run by Volunteers and some have strong ties with their communities but this could be debated too ,and they are constantly looking for help from TAB , Government funds and other grants etc just to maintain minimum basic standards in H&S etc.

And the money they get from grants is taking away from other desperate clubs and organisations e.g. kids grassroots sport ,who are desperate too for funding.

IMO its hard to justify the total overall cost for meetings that have just a few meetings a year.

I'm not following you here, it sounds like that was all funded by the club itself to bring racing to its local community, where is the cost to the industry? If the club want to fund these meetings like it appears they have , what is the issue? Youre also not taking into account the cost of running meetings at other venues that is clearly the case.

Good for them if they want to race at HB, it won't be the same though, doesn't matter what you call it its still a HB meeting . I'm in two minds about a club like Gisborne as they don't have any horse population there, but from what you've quoted it appears they were more than paying their way.

And importantly, maintaining a racing presence in the Poverty Bay area which is what Messara recommended.

What's a Club doing with $2 million in the bank. Where they saving up for a rainy day, well guess what it's raining

Didn't they sell the track to grow grapes?

How many young people gained a love for racing over the years by attending their local meetings?

They haven't factored that in when centralizing racing IMO

The socialist Govt is anti racing and not supportive....racing's biggest problem

How racing would change with a govt(although profiting) who promoted it with a twice weekly MSM feel good stories and racing news.

 Ain't gunna happen

Sensibly so when the talk of centralisation seemed seemed that this was inevitable. Leased the course and facilities back in the interim. No more.

You are kidding aren’t you?

This government has tried to do more in the last two years than the previous one did in nine.

Prove me wrong with facts, not stupid statements.

When did the govt last promote racing publicly?

They have bailed them out to stop losing an industry and maintaining a tax revenue.

Imagine promoting racing to a level they promote fake climate change.

$2 billion a year wasted on Paris

I gained my love of racing sitting on my grandfathers knee listening to the wireless and you obviously do not know what constitutes a "Socialist" government. This government has also been good to the industry. Stop with the pro National rhetoric and check the facts please.

I'm not pro National

The feel good horse stories this Govts media dishes up are banning whips, cruelty to horses and RIU cases.

Racing struggles even to  make the sports news once in a blue moon.

Give us a break.. .. their attitude to racing stinks.

That is their business, they are obviously economically astute. Why do you expect them to spend the money on the industry when it treats them with such disregard?

The question with track closures is whether the long term cost savings are greater than the long term loss of profits from reducing exposure in regional communities.

No - the question is to start with what are the cost savings from stopping racing at the smaller venues?

You might be the first person that can adequately elaborate on that, I'd love to hear it?

When the knew bill goes through will they be allowed to hang onto the $2mil , or does it have to be handed over for benefit of the racing ?

Does this forum really need these constant illogical political barbs.

This "socialist government" just what does that mean. Is it good or bad? I'm sure it makes some people feel good spouting of but you wonder at their mentality.

The classic will probably be p4p reversing his anti Winston Peters rhetoric now that National may be looking at partnering with NZ First. There I go ...... I won't get into politics again.

Pretty selective in your criticism Dunk. I see more in the blue corner on here.

I'm trying to find race winners anyway not election winners.

Good punting to you.
