Protests upheld in major 2YO, 3YO, WFA and Handicap races in New Zealand?

Recommended Posts

Would appreciate any help regarding protests upheld in major 2YO, 3YO, WFA and Handicap races in New Zealand. I am aware of Bawalaksana (Railway), Warhorse (Diamond), Satisfy ( Derby), Fanatic (Oaks) and San Luis (Manawatu Sires). Can anyone think of any others? It is for a book on the history of Australian and New Zealand racing. I live in Australia so not that aware. Thanks.

A couple that were overturned but I cant recall the exact details of were horlicks winning on protest and losing on appeal and the $50,000  jump race in the 90s that spent ages going through the appeals back and forth. Two races that have dictated what happens today.

Nukkledragga Owhata Chief lost, won and lost the 1976 Great Northern Hurdles to Thun. In 1977 he won it by 40 lengths ridden by Choc Hounsell. Thun ran third. Horlicks won the 1990 WFA Byerley Thoroughbred Stakes at Hastings after Flying Luskin was relegated but Flying Luskin was reinstated on appeal. This can’t happen today because race day results are final.

Arethusa being relegated was an absolute joke.  Clark of the course had his horse on the outside fence before the winning post and all horses contesting the race veered in with Arethusa copping the most interference and the stewards relegated her.  Almost as bad as the WA stewards and He Remarkable.

In that 1990 WFA race at Hastings Peter Johnson rode a genius race on Flying Luskin keeping Horlicks and Lance O’Sullivan in a pocket and kicking clear. No surprise that the local judicial committee relegated Flying Luskin. No surprise that Trevor McKee appealed and no surprise that Flying Luskin was reinstated. No surprise I had a hefty bet on Flying Luskin!

I remember it well. I was there that day. One of the worst decisions ever. Another shocker, also involving Flying Luskin, although he wasn't at fault, was the Wgtn Cup ($400,000) that he won that same year, when the southerner Reykjavik was relegated out of a place. Paying long odds too, which I remember very well.

Another classic southern saga was the 3yo fillies race at Oamaru in March of 1982. The Wink v Sea Princess. I have a vague idea those places changed four times after various appeals.

Hi Gubs  I remember Owhata Chiefs race in 1976 we were there and had a decent bet on Owhata Chief owned by Jonn Sale and his family from Rotorua . Owhata Chief was coming home like a train and Thun just came out and stopped O C in his tracks .The protest was dismissed and at the presentation we were all yelling out that it was a fix andthey stopped the speaches till we stopped .By this time some so called security were up in the members stand and grabbed me  [Mr Innocent] and took me down stairs and locked me in a room, unbelieveable about 15minutes later came and asked do I know the owner of OC and the other people who were yelling I acted innocent I was dying for a piss by this stage  So they escorted me to the toilet FFS .They then took me in to the commitee room to apoligize to Arthur Hughes and all these suits standing there .I were then escorted off the course and given a 3 month ban ,  The good old days don't you love them  ,Cheers BH

We’re Doomed that Oamaru race was the Waitaki Stakes for 3yr old fillies on the 22/3/82. Sea Princess and Danny Frye won but were relegated to second and The Wink and Ali Robinson were promoted to first.
