Never waste a good crisis

Unbelievable. Can't even have "final meeting ever" at your local. Just issue no licences. Local trainers? Move over, we're coming through

So who, for example, actually owns the land the Avondale racecourse sits on? How can that be sold off and the money go to the general racing industry?

Brilliant , long over due , let's do this . Racing has been in poor form for far to long , clubs sitting on millions of dollars worth of assets and achieving nothing must change .

Avondale is the biggest joke of all time , $200 million and $10,000 races , just imagine what they could have by investing $20 million at Ellerslie , upgrade 3 levels on the stand , install an all weather track and still have change . Just do it .

Centralization on it's way , more tracks closed over next 5-10 yrs . But it wont matter the number of participants is going to go thru the floor . If big name trainers keep stables in NZ they will merely be nursery and pre training stables where anything with ability moves to Australian barn . I really feel for a lot of smaller operators and the hobbyist , things are about to get really tough especially if stakes are going to be as bad as mentioned .

Here we go .. for better or for worse .. be it right or wrong, the throats are about to be cut https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=12332012

Your headline is very prescient P4P. Racing is just a sideshow to the greater developing societal landscape in a Marxist NZ. Make no mistake this crisis is a godsend for the controlling body of Socialist Cindy, a couple of dodgy lawyers and a queer. Dependence is their greatest ally, with a dressing of identity privilege (gender, race and political). Most of this lockdown based on control, not science, as we are seeing here, Australia and US.

Be very concerned.

These announcements have all the hallmarks of a sunset industry. If only Kiwis punted like Ozzies and Chinese on racing. Perhaps its just not in our DNA although Sports betting and Pokies suggest otherwise.

I imagine Avondale will dig their heels in, arguing that the land belongs to the AJC and cannot be sold. But if they have no race dates could it exist as a training venue and home of the best fruit and veg market in West Auckland?

I imagine any clubs with some finance will fight tooth and nail , i don't know if who ever is fighting the other side could afford the amount of legal stoushing . I wonder if these clubs will get together to fight it , strength in numbers .

Positive spin on it there , i don't know if there is enough light to even call it sunset .

Class action.

Perhaps. Losing battle I would have thought. It is clear that the $72 m from yesterday came with some pretty big conditions atttached......

Conditions maybe but a lot of these clubs have shit written into their constitutions for exactly this reason . The racing body would be better giving some really good incentives to clubs under threat to get them on board , Don't know what that might be because i get the feeling the cupboard is barer than old mother hubbards

If the closure of each of 15 tracks on tomorrows list doesn't provide a significant economic efficiency then the decision makers are fked. If they do not keep the best racing surfaces that also have the best track sizes - that would increase off-course betting then they are totally fked. Because on-course betting is obviously not a priority either.

Plan B? After the over 60's and their flip phones stop betting, and betting continues to decline - it will probably be time to sell another dozen tracks?

I don't know much about harness racing but how could they get rid of Palmerston north ??

Probably something to do with the fact that 98-99% of the horses racing at these meetings come from outside of the area. A large number come from the South Island.

As much as I love "historical" Avondale and the great Avondale Cup evenings, reality has to set in some time and rationalisation has to be the way to preserve our fragile future--but with the caveat that the thieving suits are gone and far away from the funds!

The trouble is Greg, the average Kiwi is a thick lazy gambler & loves Lotto and pokies, racing is just too slow and complicated for the majority. Its been a sunset industry for 10 yrs or more so all as this has done is accelerated the demise.

The wider industry has been providing all of the stakes for these clubs for years that's a pretty good incentive but the time has arrived , these clubs have a choice , stay involved and continue racing at a different venue and continue to be an active club or disband and  sell their asset , gift it to the council .

These are RACING CLUBS , they exist for the purpose of racing , only personal sour grapes will see them abandon racing . I  hope the club on the coast that handed over it's asset to the council is left high and dry and gets nothing , they will be the losers , their local council must still be pissing themselves laughing .

As a final thought , I would suggest banning any horse trained at any of these closed tracks  be banned from racing on an approved track , that should do it .

If you were able to read you would have seen that the article said the clubs would not be issued with licences to race anywhere. So no option to race elsewhere.
