5G ---- Let's do it right.

Recommended Posts

For most of the year racing is an online attraction which fits in with the current environment. Therefore the introduction of 5G is going to be a major development for racing. i've seen livestreaming of Tasmanian racing and feel that rather than viewers having to put up with material on TV they have no interest then a continual feed from one source is the way to go.

However 5G is going to be big for sports betting as well and casinos will want to muscle in as well. i.e. plenty of competition. The big question is who owns Trackside and who owns the IP generated on the racetrack.

Doing it right means getting rid of the shysters that have led racing to almost extinction. With fewer oncourse attendance racing clubs can raise capital by selling or redefining the use of their facilities. Dosen't mean they have to totally close down. Splitting Trackside away from TAB is a no brainer whilst making sure Trackside is run in the most efficient manner.

There are obviously going to be the usual suspects like Tabcorp, NZTAB, Betfair, Sky Racing etc saying come with us we know best therefore its so important starting from club level that the best options are examined.

5G can resurrect racing. Its extremely vital that racing clubs and NZTR don't sign away the IP.

Racing doesn't need the TAB, Trackside or the plethora of parasites calling themselves corporate bookies.

Trackside on Sky as its done now is pre historic. Instead of trying to plant dividends and track coverage on one screen  having a livestream from the track and other  web feeds showing wagering info separately is more logical. With 5G people most likely will have multiple devices available at any time to follow racing.

The basic requirements are clubs, owners, trainers and jockeys. All those coming together and using the benefits of low cost modern technology would save more than $100M PA. New technology means clubs can offer betting pools direct to the public and bring into racing perhaps the most important partner the sponsor.

TAB can still be a business but now clubs and participants can go it alone.

If the conference was in SA then Bernard mentioned it in a blog.

Maybe he did but going by his history and those like him they get married to the status quo. However his background with racing.com would have brought on experience of splitting away from existing TV interests.

Garry Chittick has an interesting blog on Waikato Stud web site with dry sense of humour. His visit to Matamata races prior to Christmas opened his eyes to the army of personel exiting trackside vans to run the days coverage. So much so one has to doubt whether Trackside filming of racing is all that efficient compared to a local company doing livestreaming that specializes in events.

Gruff, if you mean safe as being reliable then supposedly it is. The big thing is the speed.

As for Garry Chittick in his submission to the select committee he made a glowing fundamental error on a different topic which I'll point out in another thread.
