Agree Leo, quite incredible we have been ignored for years and now we are important - unbelievable

Tell me Bernard what costs have been reduced since we went to level 4, what's the number - what % of annual wages have management slashed - I assume 40%, but please confirm - let's have some transparency please

Obviously the cost of licences(Trainers,Jockeys,Stablehands,Trackwork riders etc) will be reduced for the new season as well as a refund for time out, through no fault of their own,for the balance of this season. If there is no racing for the rest of the season, which seems likely, then a 33.3% (4 months) refund would be in order to licenceholders.Hopefully the staff at NZTR will be paid according to what they will be doing, which is not much, same as all other NZers who have been told to bite the bullet in these tough times.

If BS (nice initials!) is asking for advice then why is he in the job? Imagine the new CEO of Air NZ coming in and after 2 years asking the pilots what he should do! Hopeless! He should lead or FO.

If we suggest a fix or fixes what happens re the messara report? Is this a sign they wont proceed with rationalisation/ track closures etc or anything else ?  This bunch of losers dont deserve our help so dump them all and start afresh!!!

I think it might make it worse the rationalisation that is,  that will really show they have no idea at all.

To try and be positive here’s my first offer of thought. BS to take a immediate 50% pay cut if not already done. All other executive positions to take a 35% pay cut. That would show leadership. Does anybody know if that’s been done?

No nomination fees below Group[ Level. Scrub trials and have local Jump outs. Immediate review and action of RIU and other investigatory outfits costs.

Cease all studies of possible future outcomes and focus on the now.. Get this nag back on its feet asap.

Hopeless indeed , but I think he has gathered all the facts ,looked at the numbers , gathered the Messara report and all opinions re that , seen the negativity from the country especially the Politicians toward racing , realised the money is gone and the dripping tap to replenish it is almost closed off and there is nothing left.........except us passionate NZ racing folk ,many of whom rely on it to make a living.

He is coming to us for some collaboration !

Surely he knows some of the stuff he needs to do , things to implement which may have faced time wasting distractions like court cases .

I think he just looking at getting the OK to charge ahead...to make racing great again haha....maybe just to save it, create a new future.

Now that Aussie has dumped staff , slashed stakes etc the precedents close to home have been established .

NZ Racing has been trying to close courses etc since the 1980's without success.

Governrment has owned and run racing.....maybe they want to set it free.

Remember BS is only NZTR , their are 2 x other codes and Sports now want a bigger slice of monetary pie thru RITA and TAB.

Things are at rock bottom and its a clean sheet.

CREATE .....dont CRY about the past !

For twenty years on Racecafe I've been advocating for Racing Head Offices to be moved to Ellerslie racecourse from Petone. The reasons are a no brainer yet little support instead  abuse such as from Nerula in a recent thread.

I have been saying this too.  Fonterra HQ should be in the Waikato and NZTR and Rita do not have to be in the cities.  There is a third floor in Pukekohe we could renovate for them.  Free parking and cheaper housing.  They could even see a horse train.....

The following message just received by all Aust Racing participants: Nice to get uptodate communication like this:

An open letter to participants in the
Australian Thoroughbred Racing Industry

31 March 2020

Dear Racing Participants,

On behalf of Racing Australia's Directors, Executive Management and staff members, I wish to express our concern to all participants in thoroughbred racing who are facing critical challenges as a consequence of  COVID-19.

The Australian people are experiencing an unprecedented public health and economic crisis.  The scale of the impact is unknown, however, we do know that the Federal, State and Territory governments have acted decisively in response to the public health and economic threat. What is indisputable is the significant effects of COVID-19 on small to medium enterprises and large corporations that have contributed to the prosperity of racing.

I am pleased to report that Racing Australia has been working closely with Principal Racing Authorities, to ensure continuation of thoroughbred racing across Australia.  Our objectives are simple:

  • to keep racing going,
  • to maintain employment  within our sport for the majority of our 74,000 plus full-time participants, and
  • to ensure that equine welfare is kept at the highest level.
These are proud achievements that would not have occurred without your compliance to the new protocols implemented by Australian racing.  Our responsibility is to follow the advice of the National Cabinet, the Principal Racing Authorities and medical experts to ensure thoroughbred racing stands the best chance to continue.

This means, when at work, follow the protocols put in place by your Principal Racing Authority at all times.  And when not at work, stay at home, obey social distancing and wash your hands!  This is vitally important for the ongoing viability of the industry we love and which supports so many livelihoods.

Racing Australia has engaged experts to represent our interests to governments throughout Australia. Racing Australia, working together with our advisors and the Principal Racing Authorities, has submitted an extensive analysis to the National Cabinet this past weekend.

The report highlights:
  • Australian racing's economic contribution of around $9.5 billion with 51% generated in regional Australia
  • 28,157 racehorses ran during the 2018/19 racing season
  • 4.2 million people attended a race-meeting last year
  • Nearly 160,000 people participate in thoroughbred racing
  • 21,425 volunteers make racing possible
  • $728.8 million in prize money was paid out last racing season
  • Caring, exercising and maintaining a Thoroughbred is a 24/7/365 commitment
  • A return to racing, should we be forced to close, is not simply a matter of turning on a tap. A 2-month closure is effectively a 6-month closure.

On behalf of Racing Australia, I sincerely hope that you all remain safe and healthy throughout these tough times and please don't drop your guard.  We need everyone to do their bit.

Greg Nichols
Chairman
Racing Australia

Why haven't we heard suggestions like that from the owners federation in the past?  Why does it require a crisis to get some sensible thought going?  Many have been advocating this for years, the rest of your suggestions have been active in the industry for sometime.

Trainers Fed, Owners Fed, NZTBA all the same as NZTR.

Well, they could take a leaf out of Qld Racing. Winter carnival scrapped and only 16 tracks to be used for the foreseeable future.

Start by setting up racing where the horses are, enough of this favouritism and get back to grass roots, where the sport will either live or die .

They could go to Awapuni ,Te Rapa or Hastings for that matter. It hasn't helped any having them in the main city centres.

Not only that but there should be some serious consideration taken to consolidating services at club level also, what do all these people in these clubs do in between  race days?

When the Racing Board sold the Petone buliding they cheekily made sure to put in a 10 year lease agreement to stop any shift. Then setting up Trackside studios in Parnell occurred with not a bleep from racing bigwigs. Having a racetrack as the backdrop to TV presentation would have been a marketing plus.

Rob McAnulty when he was involved with Auckland Racing club had the idea of creating a Racing city at Ellerslie with everything there e.g. breeders, TAB, NZTR , trackside, museum, cafes etc a place overseas visitors would treat as first stop. Closeness to airport being big plus.

What was Rob McAnulty’s involvement with ARC ?? Was he on the ARC Board at anytime?

Yes and the Breeders Association went there, built a brand new building at the cost of $600,000 on the Auckland Racing Club land - leased. Then about 6 years ago Auckland said piss off we want to develop that land so they (NZTBA) were forced to walk away and leave behind a building worth $600,000.
Some of you people gave some wonderful ideas sometimes!

You must know there has been a push to get free racing back ever since it was taken away. There has been huge pressure to increase stakes, not enough trickle down to fund free racing they say.

Volunteers prop up the sector groups and there are no perks doing that. Always there is an opportunity for you are others to donate their time to them.

I have told you racing here is a Communist model. The Politburo captured income side and through their appointed commisars ran the thing broke. I said the model would fail. The owners ROI cant prop it up, it is the serfs who will suffer most. This is Venezuela. The above is solely my opinion.

Firstly some comparisons between Aussie Gallops and NZ Gallops.

Aussie had 28157 horses chasing stakes of A$729 mil.

NZ had 4812 horses chasing NZ$60 mil.

It dawned on me that a few dozen NZ horses are able to chase probably more than $60 mill in Aussie as well !

The other thing we need to keep in mind when suggesting the way forward in NZTR gallops is the relationship between the Codes in NZ and the way each code is rewarded under the now RITA umbrella.

I need to gather the facts but imagine the Gallops are treated the worst when distribution compared to turnover !

And remember many of the excess salaries we criticise on here are related to RITA or the TAB !

They had a $700k , 5 > $300k , 6 > 200 <300 , 118 > $100 <200  etc

NZTR had 1 x $200 and 12 > $100k.

Harness and doggies don't anaylise theirs but even though we think a few should go numbers don't seem excessive.

In fact NZTR received about $88mill revenue [mostly RITA ] and $80 mill went to stakes and clubs  and less than 10% other expense incl $4mil STAFF.

So kick the whole office out and you would have $4 mill....this hardly registers with RITA !

Wasn't the BONUS BET BLUNDER nearly that ????

RITA had wage bill of $60 mill.

Other things to remember is that the $6.7 mil  for RIU , $1.9 mil lab testing and JCA $1.4mill over $10mill total is paid from POKIES !

Integrity seen as major issue , in research a while back...triggered this response !

So gather the facts , as above ,before making suggestions !
