Yes, it was a stretch to say that the extension was only "two days", even though with so many businesses still unable to open the long weekend affected very few as far as shopping days goes, however this journo, right in the midst of his criticism (and not for the first time) claims the extension was a "week" when in fact it was 5 days. He's just as hypocritical as the person he's criticising.....

The nation breathed a collective sigh of relief as the Prime Minister took to the Beehive pulpit and for once delivered some good news.

Jacinda Ardern wasn't giving too much away initially, delivering the now familiar message of how we have worked together as a team and protected each other for the past six weeks.

But she finally got to the declaration we had all been holding our breath for: We are moving out of Level 3, meaning we can resume a semi-normal life again.

What the Prime Minister was really saying is we can now be trusted to do what is right, keep our distance, wash our hands and not party too hard.

Some would say restoring trust was long overdue and, as grown-ups, most of us would of course have done what was right.

Business knows it's on notice to behave itself, to deal with customers in the way they've never been dealt with before, to keep them at arm's length.

Of course they'll behave. They like everyone else want to finally start making money again, to try to rekindle something from the ashes.

It'll be more than a week until we know whether and to what extent that's possible. A walk down Ponsonby Rd or Courtenay Place will confirm the survivors.

Flights will start operating again, but few people will be on them if there's nothing open at the other end.

The trick in all of this is to convince the public it's safe again.

New Zealand's become a nation living in fear of a virus that most of us will never be infected with.

If it wasn't for our efforts, the Prime Minister tells us, the number of dead would by now be in the thousands.

Of course we can never possibly know that, but we do know that the way our population lives in this country is nothing like the way they live in northern Italy, New York or Wuhan.

But so afraid are we of this virus that it's turned many of us from being well reasoned individuals into grumpy, intolerant narks.

We've been preached at for weeks now from the Beehive pulpit to treat everyone as though they have Covid-19, to keep our distance, to stay at home and to wash our hands.

But it's the confidence to go about our daily lives again which will be the challenge.

Consider what should be a pleasant walk and before you know it you are in step with a street monitor.

Many of us will have had the experience of being singled out and shouted at for not keeping our distance. Shouting in our case was required because the distance was so great.

An elderly, well-dressed man out for a walk with his wife must have been short-sighted because my bubble was obnoxiously accused of not keeping our distance as we walked past the couple.

So enraged was the man that he diminished the social distance to remonstrate about not wanting to catch our disease.

We may not have been as risk but we certainly were when he finished his hissy fit. His no-doubt long-suffering, sheepish wife simply stared at the pavement.

Imagine what going for a walk with him must be like.

The man was obviously scared and had, like many Kiwis, taken the word from the Beehive as gospel, to treat everyone as though they have got the ghastly virus. He clearly believed the message despite the fact we have just two people in hospital with it and a recovery rate of more than 90 per cent.

Psychologists will look back on and study this time in our history. How a nation can so successfully and completely be brought to heel is nothing short of phenomenal.

The damage done, by delayed healthcare and the myriad issues that encompasses, by the ruination of many businesses and the devastating, ongoing social ills that will create will take much longer to repair than the lockdown lasted.

The rebuild starts with Grant Robertson's Budget on Thursday, but this political magician will need more than a rabbit and a hat to get us back on track.

Apparently you can have ten tables of 10 people at a restaurant but you can't have the same people there if they are attending the same function.

Am i misunderstanding something here.

You can also have up to 44 rugby players plus coaches etc on a rugby field but they cannot attend a players funeral.

Ethical Questions Arise After Scientists Brew Super Powerful 'SARS 2.0' Virus

Creating powerful new viruses has benefits and dangers.

More than a decade after its outbreak, the name "SARS" still incites memories of worldwide panic over a disease that, we thought at the time, couldn't be stopped. Now, 13 years later, scientists have created a hybrid version of a virus that could be the world's next pandemic, a "SARS 2.0." 

The findings have brought up ethical questions about whether scientists should pursue "gain-of-function" research, or work that could increase the virulence of certain pathogens, despite the dangers of creating a virus that could potentially wreak havoc if released into the wild..

Furthermore, the study comes in the wake of a US government announcement of a moratorium on federal funding for research that focused on the viruses that cause SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), as well as those that cause influenza and MERS. This study began before that ban was created, so it was grandfathered in and allowed to run to completion. 

In order to study the virus in a lab, scientists created a "chimaeric virus," or a hybrid made of protein and the structure of a SARS virus. Critics say that the benefit isn't worth it to isolate a virus that, theoretically, could escape the lab and infect people.

"If the virus escaped, nobody could predict the trajectory," Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, told Nature.

The virus in question, a strain of bat coronavirus, is similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the disease that triggered widespread panic during an outbreak in Asia in 2002 and 2003 that spread to 29 countries, infected about 8,000, and killed over 700 people. After the outbreak, scientists concluded that the virus likely jumped from a species of bat to humans through a process called zoonotic transfer.

Now, according to the new study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the very same bat species—the Chinese horseshoe bat—may be harboring another virus with similar characteristics. One of those characteristics is that, unfortunately for us, the "highly pathogenic" virus can be transferred to humans.

 

"The strain grew equally well to SARS in human cells," Dr. Ralph Baric, a professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the lead author of the study, told Motherboard. "It resisted all vaccines and immunotherapy, too." 

But Baric argues that the research is helpful to preparing vaccines for the next epidemic. Most often, one strain will emerge along with several other, very similar strains—just like these strains did among bat populations. Baric likens this to a swarm of emerging viruses. 

"This is the main problem with emerging viruses," he said. "In animals, there is a beehive of emerging viruses. You get strains that are more and more diverse—but they're still closely related."

In this case, the newly-created virus, labeled SHC014-CoV, is just 12 percent different from SARS. And it's not if a strand like this will cause an outbreak—but when.

"We were actually fairly lucky with SARS; humanity was, I mean," said Baric. "It was a credit to public health actions, like quarantines—that's what really stopped [the] epidemic." 

But, said Baric, if people hadn't acted quickly in the small window of 24 to 30 hours after it began, the SARS outbreak would have ended very differently. 

"People don't realize how really lucky we are," he said.

According to Baric, the risk of "gain-of-function" research is worth it. The findings could provide a way to create vaccines and immunotherapy treatments before the next epidemic strikes. Because we have identified both SARS and SHC014-CoV, it's now possible to develop vaccines that could target those viruses and the viruses that share commonalities between them. In other words, the new findings may help develop vaccines for many more strains of infectious diseases even though we haven't identified them yet.

"Now, we can capture the entire swarm," Baric said. "That's the beauty of the study and most important take-home." 

Right now, it's unclear right whether the new virus, like SARS, could jump from human to human yet. Until then, scientists will continue to develop new defenses against the next epidemic—and wait for it to arrive.

 

Guys like Baric and Kawaoka have been experimenting and mutating viruses in Labs suitable for Biowarfare for years, and look where that got us.... interesting these two are connected to Gilead pharmaceuticals  and Bharat .we should be more concerned with the number of labs worldwide now spending huge amounts of taxpayer money experimenting with viruses in the name of public health, something the US were trying to avoid with the moratorium in 2012 ..... pandoras box .....I see on Al jazeera tonight there is a petition started to stop any vaccine patent for the greater social good, that wont make Big Pharma happy. The Dubious Tony Fauci has been involved with these researchers throughout so he should be privy to key information one would suspect

They have yet to be disclosed.

Whilst there's understood to be some written by Chinese students there's none for those in other countries....There should be IF we had, or have, such an infectious disease.
