tripple alliance 1,025 Report post Posted March 23, 2020 All racing off for four weeks . MEDIA RELEASE FROM NZTR The announcement that New Zealand would move to level 4 of the COVID-19 alert system in 48 hours means that all racing will cease for the next four weeks from Tuesday 24 March. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand, Greyhound Racing New Zealand and the TAB, have met to discuss what steps the industry needs to take to protect the livelihoods of its participants. While the country will effectively be in lockdown, the welfare of our animals remains as an essential service during this time. Leggy 4,076 Report post Posted March 23, 2020 That's a bit of a no brainer comment. Most of them at NZTR won't be required in the mean time though. We'll look after the horses and I think 4 months not 4 weeks would be a more likely estimate. Huey and nomates

Might (might not) have another go late winter / early early spring if racing is operating and I agree 4 months is more likely than 4 weeks , will racing survive this ? any ones guess . Our biggest problem is mirrored by the NRL , both have been poorly managed financially over many decades whereby both have squandered many millions without putting money away as a backstop in the case of emergency . In our case more recently 50 million pished up against the wall on a totally over the top betting platform . To all the participants who are caught up in this situation , good luck and stay strong . rdytdy 5,341 Report post Posted March 23, 2020 Latest Update COVID-19 Tuesday 24 March Mary Burgess 24 March 2020 As New Zealand prepares to go into lockdown at midnight on Wednesday here is a brief overview of where the industry sits at present: Racing/Trials/Jumpouts As per yesterday’s announcement there will be no racing, trials or jumpouts from Tuesday, 24 March for the next four weeks while the country is on lockdown. Training Centres/stables NZTR has been in lengthy consultation with MPI regarding the care of horses currently in training, the protocols around that care and what that might look like. We expect a decision from MPI later today. Airfreight All international equine flights have been suspended until further notice. The decision to cease the uplift of cabin occupants meant professional grooms were no longer able to safely accompany the shipment of horses travelling overseas. For any queries, contact NZB Airfreight Manager Greg Northcott on +64 27 459 4995 or email Greg.Northcott@nzb.co.nz. South Island Sale New Zealand Bloodstock has made the decision to postpone the 2020 South Island Sale that was due to be held on 17 April. The sale has now been moved to Friday 7 August 2020. Karaka May Sale A decision around the Karaka May Sale, which was due to be held on Friday 15 May, will be made on Wednesday 15 April. Should there be no update at that time as to when the current restrictions might end NZB will consult with stakeholders and either postpone the sale to Sunday, 7 June, or cancel the sale. If the latter option is the case the horses may be offered for sale online on NZB’s subsidiary, gavelhouse.com. For any queries, contact Bloodstock Sales Manager, Danny Rolston or Director and Operations Manager James Jennings. Hall of Fame Dinner The New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame biennial induction dinner, which was to be held in Hamilton on Sunday, 3 May, has been postponed. A new date will be scheduled either later this year or early next year. Draft racing calendar 2020/21 season The next draft of the racing calendar for next season has been paused at this stage as the possible implications of the current lockdown are considered. Float companies Float companies are also in discussions with MPI as the Animal Welfare Act may, in certain situations, allow them to operate in a minimal manner if absolutely essential ie transporting horses to vet clinics; from quarantine etc. Contact: Majestic at 0800 4 FLOATS (356287) OR Premier Horse Floats at 027 640 4559. rdytdy 5,341 Report post Posted March 24, 2020 Meeting News Important Notice - MPI Update NZTR has been communicating with MPI throughout the day to determine how racehorses currently located at trainers’ stables will be handled during the four-week lockdown which comes into effect at midnight on Wednesday, 25 March. MPI has requested that NZTR, along with all other organisations in the primary sector applying to be considered as essential services during this time, complete an approval application form. This documentation is expected to be sent to NZTR for completion this evening and we will be submitting it as soon as practical to MPI for consideration. NZTR, following input from the NZ Trainers’ Association; the Racing Clubs Advisory Group; veterinarians; and track managers, has drawn up stringent protocols around the handling of horses and these have already been forwarded to MPI. We appreciate that this is not the ideal situation for clubs, track managers and trainers. Like them we would have preferred an indication as to what MPI’s position was regarding our industry’s status, but we are not the only organisation they are dealing with at present. At this stage we ask industry participants to bear with us, keep doing what you are doing with your horses and we will bring you a response from MPI tomorrow.
