Precisely. They are catering for a different class of horse

If lucky to win a race or two up north your horse suddenly is uncompetitive...as similar points for win on any track.

Hence the "intermediate" grade decimated ,not like v like.

Gambit won well last week...off a 79 rating it beat horses like Triple Eight [ 110] and others who raced in Interdoms.

Other examples....Magilligan Point won two races quickly ,almost immediately was racing 84 & 88 rating horses.Took several runs to get back to 55 level to be competitive, has won twice recently now rated 66.

Tim's Simon snared a winter and Junior race ,but only really competitive at Cambridge.....recently sent to South Australia to race .Lower stakes but like v like and horse has a chance.

Horse shortage ...good for no one. Less field size , poor spectacle ,poor betting , less races[ 5 a disgrace !] , drivers lack opportunity ,juniors future bleak.

Little seem to change ,tho ATC soon to address members in meeting !

Other factors overlooked such as the travel ......horse folk getting home in middle of night etc.

Its hard enough when your horse loses but working thru night to run points off your rating , which takes an age must be heart breaking !

It would be nice to see a plan to correct it.

No one seems to care.....I mentioned horse shortage in North to a Mainland administrator last week,  along with fact that very few horses seem to race at two and races cancelled for those who want to.......he replied ,"Yes we putting more races on of 4 year olds to keep em here ".

Happy Mainlanders......plenty of horses ,can race like v like , Juniors can get drives !

All is rosy !

Or is it the fact the atmosphere is better on course, the dividends are better and the racing is more exciting and better to watch on grass.

The discussion is about stakes that owners horses run for , not the atmosphere or punting divvies. If grass track racing is so much much more interesting it follows that more would be bet and thus stakes higher at the Mot. This weekends stakes says the opposite is occurring or are the club building a war chest at owners expense.

Haha.....dodgy modems and technology have changed many things in recent years not only the Racing game !

Were the good old days any better than current times.

Cardigan Bay could win off 78 yards ,drivers mid race would offer $$$$ if rivals gave up the lead and Morrie H said any horse not drugged should be put out cos it proof it not trying to win !

I've 2 trotters at Auckland tomorrow and happy with mile for 1 as just back from a break. But the other, a novice trotter, starting from a stand over a mile, is likely to find it tough. But at least no trouble getting a start and for a change, only maidens in field. We trotting owners are in a slightly better position than pacing owners as hcp starts are the norm. Pacers at the park must draw well, and be both fast off the gate and have good sprint at end, else they are just filling the field. But both gaits can end up on ratings and hcps that make retirement or one way trip to Aussie the economic necessity.

silli pilli. see if you can find a solution to a problem without going to the dogs.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually John,my comment to Andre was more than tongue in cheek. He spent several years working in leading kennels in both Islands, before beginning his Trotting Journey with Stephen Doody.

As a solution, what,if any, travel subsidy do ATC offer Trainers from Lower North Island & South Island!

Are trainers saying "we don't want miles"??

And I'm wondering why they dont start at 6 or shortly after. I'm sure the horsemen would love to be home by dark then also punters and public could then go on to some other evening entertainment. Not a lot of thought going into things is there.?

As owners it was great for us coming up from Cambridge with 1st race after 7. We had an easy run all the way and missed the worst of Friday rush hr traffic. Had horses in 1st and last race and already half way home. Our trainerneeded more time of course but still wouldn't have had the traffic issues that a 6 pm start involves.
