I haven’t spoken to him personally so this is second hand but my impeccable sources say Scooter walked because of the way Ellerslie has handled this, combined with the fact he was overlooked for the position ( given that he’s fulfilled the role alone many times )

Fair enough. Thanks. Just he was not to blame and looked as perplexed as anyone when the incident occured.

So Tony McGovern comes full circle after being the starter at Ellerslie before he left for the role in Hong Kong which led to Gripper's appointment.

Wonder if he will still be wearing the trademark Panama Hat?

Coming from HK it will defo mean no errors  . It runs like a Rolex watch up there .

Brought couple in Singapore years back after day at the old racecourse there , tenner down from 100  for his and hers . Actually lasted years , does the paint normally come off a Rolex  though ?

I f you were trying to select a person that would ensure this incident would never happen again then Trev would be the safest bet

I'm a fan of this line of thought (you don't sack someone after an expensive fuckup; you've just paid for them to learn an expensive lesson so you keep them around to use that knowledge you've paid for). Of course, you would've thought that after a similar incident at Avondale the lesson would've been learnt already; the fact that it wasn't means maybe Trev will never figure out to follow the bloody manual and not fuck it up again.

Good to see Tony McGoven back .When the horses go into the stalls as the last horse goes in Trev always hits the button .Yesterday when the last horse went in Tony gave them about 10 secs before he let them go .Cheers BH

It’s not that simple chap, the longer you hold them the greater the chance one will have a meltdown or do something irrational

The art is to give them just enough time to get organised then to let them go before it all turns to custard

Being restrained in starting gates is incredibly stressful for a horse, and sadly ( unlike other major racing countries ) the NZ barrier crews seem poorly resourced and short of staff.

All things considered the starters and their crew do a great job .... but they could certainly do better if NZTR threw more resources at them

Agree 100% on the number of resources. Look at OZ and particularly HK, they seem to have 1 barrier attendant for each horse.

Totally agree. You only have to look at HK/ Singapore/Japan, it's almost one barrier assistant per horse.

Actually it is kosher. Dave. I bought it to remember a horse and got the Evalovin a Tudor - that runs slow ffs,

Buy a Rolex and it costs a grand plus every 10 years for service. Buy a Timex, it stops you jump on it. Seiko are like Toyota hard to kill.

Sentimental fools we are.
