Cabriere

Recommended Posts

Race 4 at Gunnedah has a horse in it called Cabriere. Anyone remember this horse? Taranaki I think. Middle distance specialist. Open handicapper. Race 5 competitor when r5 was the open distance race. R7 was the open sprint. All over the shop nowadays.

Go Cabriere at Gunnedah. Paying $26 FO

Early 60s ran good races in age group classics but ran up against Commanding who carried all before him though was still top stakeswinning 2yo in 60/61. Then ran up against Cracksman as a 3yo.but won the Wanganui Guineas. Lots of placings in good races but just couldn't best some top horses in the big races. Nonetheless a handy horse as I remember.

Cabriere was bred in 1958 by Alpenhorn out of Midpicca. He raced 145 times for 23 wins. Owned by CW Ansford a prolific Stratford owner. Arch Tudor won 17 with him then Malcolm Smith 4 and Jim Didham 2. He won 7 of his 10 starts at 2. He raced until 11. His first win was at Stratford on the 24/10/60 ridden by Bob Jury. Kaye Tinsley was his regular rider. He won the 1963 Opunake Cup and the 1966 Marton Cup.

Blue Cabriere did not win the Wanganui Guineas. He didn’t run in it in 1961 but his stablemate Tara’s Pride won it in 1962.

I stand corrected but boy, weren't there a goodly number of consistent horses around in the 60s? Good memories.
