Good advertising for the 'new race' , but damaging to racing maybe. 40,000 at an event in Sydney ...is that amazing ? MCG exceeds that many ,many times each year . Did much for racing, what a crock.... Vlandys had everyone, racing and non racing people aware of the event. Little wonder NZ racing is suffering with small minded commentary like that as for 40,000 that’s all Randwick holds, hard for you to comprehend what capacity is ?? Of course history and tradition will always ensure the Cup has a special place but the worm has turned , owners, trainers and jockeys now have a choice and the alternate is becoming more attractive. Nukkledragga 229 Report post Posted October 4, 2019 There is one theme to most of the 'successful' new races both in oz and in nz in that they are self funded, the kosciusco by $5 raffle tickets ,magic millions and karaka millions by a levy on horses sold .They are an example of people taking control of their own destiny, and not waiting for the powers that be to one day pull finger and decide to form a committee to investigate whos turn it is to shout the cheese scones for morning tea!!! Trump 2,741 Report post Posted October 8, 2019 Racing NSW supremo, Peter V’landys, quoted in today’s Australian Newspaper. <Quote: “The Melbourne Cup will always be the race that stops the nation, it doesn’t matter when it is run”. End Quote>. He also said, “The success of The Everest has shown that racing can embrace new ideas and appeal to a younger audience. Racing needs to do this to stay relevant, it can’t just stay the way it has always been because then the sport will go backwards”. I put this up for all those who still yearn for the good ole days and want to live in the past. Racing 50 years ago is totally different to what it is today - except in racing land that’s still doing things “the old way”. Remind you of any such area? South Australia comes to mind, NZ...
