gubellini 3,923 Report post Posted September 23, 2019 Taupo had on course only racing until 1978. Not sure when they began. From 1979 on they have had a full TAB licence. The first Taupo Cup under the full licence was won by Dainty Oak trained at Matamata by Terry McDermott and raced by long time owner Alan Schaare. Ridden by Richard Marsh from Cambridge. Hj Gube yeah we were working on a shut down at Fletcher Plyco in Taupo christmas 1974 the weather was hot as so our boss said lets go up to races .It was hotter up there .There was some great drinkers in our group and we drank the track dry ,thats including our own beer . At a glance I found THIS dating back to 1878. just read that old article chik....says a horse broke its enck in one of the hurdle races in 1878..dont tell the loony left thay'll start a campaign saying we've been abusing horses in Taupo for 130 years.
