JJ Flash 2,114 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 10 races carded,2 have 5 noms and 2 have only 4 noms at this stage. Worse, the Grp3 Holmes Vase which carries a guaranteed NZ Cup start as well as a 30 K purse has attracted only 5 noms. On the plus side its nice to see Monbet nominated. We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 It is certainly a far cry from the days when the National and the Louisson were the big races in August and always got top fields. It is noticeable that when Purdon doesn't front with any horses the tighter class of races always lack for numbers. Personally, as only a casual trotting observer these days, I am not a big fan of the rating system. It seems to work for the gallops but pretty hard to follow for the trots. It seems to encourage horses to drop back too quickly and you end up with very few better class horses. JJ Flash
Blue 1,080 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 It's also interested me for a while too that many are bemoaning the state of galloping in the South Island with small fields etc but it seems there are the horses about when you have 80 lining up at the trials at Rangiora today. eljay 1,711 Report post Posted August 26, 2019 Surely that gives a hint to Ken & his den - close the Metropolitan tracks and keep open (and utilise more) the country grass tracks. They seem to get dollops more noms than the big boys

Interesting to now see the clubs that put up the big money are battling to fill up fields. They are damned if they do and damned if they dont in terms of putting on races for tighter rated horses. Lets leave Ken out of this as he is a leading light in the industry at governance level Greg We're Doomed

Stables 577 Report post Posted August 28, 2019 That Ken is a leading light in the industry at Governance level or should I be looking at the sleep emoji. It concerns me that Rita has be running the show for several weeks now and nothing appears to have changed. HRNZ don't even appear to be aware that there was a Messara report. They have restructered their board, but all thats achieved is disenfranchise all sub entities such as the Breeders Association and the Owners Association These organisations are no longer guaranteed seats on the board and consequently the opportunity to advocate for their members. We're Doomed 4,824 Report post Posted August 28, 2019 I see they did manage to get ten races and six in the feature, although three of them were low enough rated to race in an easier race on the card, and only three trainers represented. When Purdon isn't interested fields do fall away badly. How a race like that can hold group status is beyond me, although I don't think the trots are too concerned about group status. One problem might be that the rating 78 trotters, which I imagine is quite high, the rating system is totally beyond me, only race for $10,000, the same as maidens. I know some people love the idea of paying maidens the same or more than winners, the socialist approach to racing, but it hardly seems to encourage success. So people complain (on here anyway) that nobody can beat beat Purdon, yet we also hear when Purdon isn't interested the friends fall away badly? That doesn't make sense to me..... The numbers overall aren't too bad in the end, although don't see Minbet in there anywhere? As noted above, he was a nomination? That doesn't make sense to me..... I did think the same myself. It looked like a good opportunity for the non Purdon horses to win some money; perhaps there just aren't any. It doesn't augur well for the season ahead if that is the case.

The Monbet race over 1950 was obviously canned due to insufficient acceptors. As for Purdon comments , they get bagged when the win or lose and get bagged for not lining up - a case of cant win perhaps . Would love to know what they make of all the criticism they get or do they just ignore it and keep on winning more.
