Racing Victoria has made a play to get the best jockeys available riding in Melbourne over the spring carnival with huge cash prizes on offer over five meetings.

Jockeys will compete for $400,000 in prizemoney in Racing Victoria’s ‘Star of the Saddle’ competition.

Under the plan, riders will accrue points for their rides at each meeting with the prizes on offer to the winner at the following fixtures.

Racing Victoria will finalise and release the conditions of the Star of the Saddle challenge before the start of the spring carnival.

Had to laugh at poor old David Hayes complaining about the Jockeys comp....wants money given to trainers instead.....

More details on where the money is......eyewatering stuff.

Racing Victoria has announced a massive spring carnival prizemoney boost, confirming that for the first time there will be more than $100 million in prizemoney and bonuses on offer over the Victorian Spring Carnival.

It has been announced that a record 16 races will offer prizemoney of $1 million or more, with 21 Group 1 races to headline the carnival.

Racing Victoria, the Victorian Racing Club and the Victorian Government have combined to deliver a more than $13 million boost for this year's Spring Carnival, in a move aimed to further cement the state’s carnival on the world stage.

With significant prizemoney increases also announced for country races, it brings the total uplift of prizemoney and bonuses offered across the state this spring to more than $18 million.

A focus will also remain on three year-olds and stayers, whilst showcasing elite weight-for-age racing headlined by the Cox Plate.

“Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival is an internationally renowned racing event and we are committed to again showcasing the best horses, jockeys and trainers from Australia and abroad across the Carnival’s most prestigious and coveted races,” said Racing Victoria CEO, Giles Thompson.
