Racing Act

Recommended Posts

The Racing Act received it's third reading in Parliament yesterday with unamous support. The members of the RITA Board have all been appointed. Dean McKenzie has been appointed as Chairman. They will take contol of racing on the 1st July 2019. At last we will have a chance to rid ourselves of all the bludgers employed in administration of the NZ Racing Board , Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and the Racing Integrity Unit. The control of racing clubs will also come up for change. Maybe we will now see a resurection of racing and an improvement in stakes. The sooner the deadwood is removed the better

Getting rid of employees in NZ is not the easiest thing to do Stables without writing a lot of expensive cheques. Given the state of the balance sheet that wont be happening anytime soon IMHO, Methinks the new board will be looking for immediate reductions in the  current cost structures they are inheriting. Racing has been going downhill for decades and although the new board looks mostly to be a good mix they face mammoth hurdles and thus it may take them multiple years to right the wrongs of previous administrations.

Thats aside, by all accounts McKenzie does not suffer fools so members of the senior management team might be feeling a tad nervous.

I heard that the sports bet take out will be distributed by the ministers discretion , not the percentage taken.  Other sports opposed this as they say it props up racing and racing clubs. Is this part of the legislation?

The NZRB will cease to exist as at 1 July 2019

Yes current NZRB employees become accountable to RITA board the next day. Big John and co will then report to McKenzie and the new RITA board

Heads WILL Roll

Tell me who and when. I'm saying that under current NZ employment law no one will be gone immediately or any time soon from the current NZRB who will report to RITA board post 1 July. The only exception will be those that choose to leave voluntarily

So what you really want is the departure of the NZRB board Chairperson Glenda or do you not understand the basics of governance.

Either way you are going to.have your wish. She is gone at the end of the month along with all the current board members.

Not all the current board

Bill Birnie is now part of Rita and Liz Dawson is an ex member.

Dean is also on the board of NZTR.

Precisely, and Allen will follow. (I wonder why you have to adopt such a supercilious tone?)

It does not follow that Allen goes just because there is a new board structure taking over. That is your key point in all of this and its patently wrong. He will like most CEO's move on at some point but if you think its when the new board takes over your sorely out of touch with NZ employment law and reality.

All the current NZRB board are gone at the end of the month . The new RITA board does include former NZRB members as you say but is a totally new entity which does not have any direct code representation.

DM stood down from NZTR ages ago presumably as he saw his RITA position as being a conflict of interest.
