Lets all hope he holds together as the deep south need a new superstar Cup class horse.

I love the Southland socialist ideology whereby the "superstar Cup class horse" races for the same stake as maidens with up to 40 starts for no wins. Interesting way to try and encourage the better horses.

Completely different issue to the rise of UMC as he treads a path to Cup.

I agree re 11k.maidens but they sure attract nice Canterbury horses and  the punting dollar

Amazing run first up today.

Smashed the clock ...

2.55.9 for the 2400 - Only 1.5 sec outside the NZ record after having no favours in the run.

53.2 last half (25.6 from the 800 to the 400, followed by 27.6 last quarter)

No workouts or trials to sharpen him so he can only get better!

yes Jack, no need for concern , another super performance  even if a gap now in the picket fence. UMC did stand (dwelt) a little being on 50 metres alone poss added a further 10 metres equiv.to his handicap.the fact that the other drivers went hard esp last 800 to stop him winning was their good luck. Kirsty drove as she said she would and has been reprimanded for honesty with the press.  Roll on the Hannon.

Mate of mine who clocks everything in the deep south tells me his personal last 2400m (post to post) was 2.51.8 - well inside the NZ record - and he was held up through the middle half by horses struggling to keep up!

Not a bad pipe opener!

That would be technically from a mobile if you go from the actual 2400m mark. But still beats The Dorchester time. He is a very very good horse that's for sure

has there ever been a horse capable of running seconds under nz record times first up ,not even a trial.? I timed him in 2. 51.5 from a mobile although not 100 % off video  but only confirms his under 2.52 time by Jacks mate. .which only proves he is getting better . if that's even possible. I would think the blue army may be at least a little concerned.I remember the days when a horse going 3.05 in a qualifier was thought of as a potentially very good horse.

He is definitely getting better, there is no denying that. And one would expect there's more improvement in him yet. It's a daunting prospect for his opposition that's for sure.

The horse is to a large extent, still learning the racing game eg. how to take the passing lane, how to take a sit and come with one run, how to relax during a race, how to not get fired up if getting eyeballed by another runner, how to step off the mark cleanly, how to not jump over shadows on the track or get distracted by large crowds, or put off by strong wind etc the list goes on.

All going well, it will add up to what will hopefully become the next big gun on the Grand Circuit.

Think there may be a few occasions, but not many, if any.

To steal Scribe's song; How many horses you know gunna run like this, not many, if any!

Star Galleria did last season first up, but possibly had a trial? In any event, good effort to notch up a NZ record fresh up.

Be interesting to see if he backs up when he next lines up- tough first runs without trials can flatten even the best . I do hope that is not the case as this horse does possess the x factor which attracts the public.

True race cafers, the big test is the Hannon. Fav is still obviously Spankem (2.40) with UMC (4.50)  and even the giant Chase Auckland is at around 5.00. (all pre noms) Even putting an 8 start horse in the same company as the Purdon runners is testament to his standing. If he wins the Hannon he will have arrived in the bigtime  and poss become Cup fav. in futures markets.Good luck to Mr Kilkelly:rcfe-like: and all others involved.

Well done to the NZ TAB for getting some odds out early for the race. Too skinny for my liking, I won't touch anything, but good on them for trying. They are possibly starting to wake up.

I'd have Thefixer, Spankem, Tiger Tara and possibly Chase Auckland as the horses ahead of UMC at this stage for the Cup. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into the winner of the Hannon, moreso the respective runs of each contender, and their performance within the race.
