Ohokaman 5,759 Report post Posted May 13, 2019 You all seem to be forgetting who is behind Melody Belle.....you don't think there will be any pressure there....?? And I agree with Trumpy, if The Bostonian wins the Stradbroke it changes things. But might be ignored anyway.....
scooby3051 10,692 Report post Posted May 13, 2019 Pressure or no pressure she deserves to win ...I had the same thing happen to me with Love To Dance we were the best 2yo in the country..based on performance, clearly.. and had it robbed from us...because a 2yo who won a restricted race with a big stable got the votes...we still got the Ford 2yo of the year ,and what a beautiful trophy it was. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted May 13, 2019 Do they still conduct a vote for the HOTY awards? Get the racing press, Industry participants etc casting votes? If so, I think that it should be changed and an agreed format of points awarded for G1,G2 and G3 performances. Rate NZ Group race wins at say, 3 points for G1 Win, 2 for G2 and1 for G3. Then Aust equivalents could be rated a little higher at say,7, 6 and 5. Maybe selected G1 races could have a higher rating. Races such as Cox Plate, Doncaster, Epsom, Caul and Melb Cups. In NZ perhaps the Livermol could rate higher but you get my drift? Also, to win an award you must have wins at Group 1 level. That’s why a horse like Osborne Bulls would struggle to win an Australian award because of all his 2nds, whereas Santa Ana Lane would brain him. This gives transparency and also takes out the politics and lobbying for votes etc.The NZ award for best 2yo tends to go to a Sires Produce Winner doesn’t it? talk
fitzy 143 Report post Posted May 13, 2019 12 hours ago, Trump said: Interestingly, MB has started in the two main (recognised by many) G1 Sprints in NZ, The Ellerslie Railway and The Trentham Telegraph, finishing 3rd in the Railway and then near the rear in The Telegraph. The Otaki G1 is really a G3 and the Royal Stakes could hardly be regarded as a genuine G1. In the past, she has failed in 2 Australian runs. So although she’s competitive in NZ and is fave for HOTY, I really think a Straddie win by The Bostonian will cause the judges to have a good think about it. He would certainly win Sprinter of the Year. If he doesn’t win the Stradbroke then I think MB gets the nod for HOTY. (JMHO) Trump you have overlooked her win in the QTC Sires produce 2 seasons back. No doubt her form in Sydney last autumn wasn't great, overall her 3YO form was only fair, but there is no doubt she has gone to a new level as a 4YO. Not sure about now but the year I mention we won a Group1a Group2 and was second in a Group 1...the horse that got voted won a restricted MM race...so go figure. Hence the reason to abandon the voting structure and put in a transparent points system. Get someone like Greg Carpenter to rate all the Australasian and HK, Singapore Group races and come up with a suitable ranking of the races. Eligibility remains with NZ based and trained horses regardless of where they compete. If Lisa Latta trains a horse to win the Golden Slipper at its first start then surely, that would win 2yo of the year - even if another horse won 2 Group 1 2yo races in NZ? Except of course in the case of Sacred Falls who although won the 2000 Gns and was unbeated in 7 NZ starts was not eligible for HOTY as when he won the Doncaster at 3 had been transferred to Waller. Trump 2,741 Report post Posted May 25, 2019 If he wins the Stradbroke and is not NZ’s HOTY, then we will have confirmation that either the Voters know nothing about racing, or, the Voting system needs to be changed in favour of a points system weighted in favour of G1 wins in Aust/Hk, or, it’s rigged. What a great performance by a very good horse and 10/1 to boot!!
