lamour 673 Report post Posted April 6, 2019 8 of the Mares in the Matchmaker series being run at Yonkers presently are former Nz ers. If we catered for 4 year old plus mares here most of those would still be racing in NZ. Instead the owners are forced to sell because the people programming races here won’t cater for them adequately. As a consequence they are lost to our breeding industry. Is it time to take programming off clubs and centralise it with a national committee of breeders, trainers and owners involved, that can oversee complimentary programming nationwide and inject some common sense into the system? Your idea, very sound as it is , is one that has been mooted on here many times but it falls on deaf ears on most occasions with the powers at be. Not sure centralising it with breeders having a say is a good model after watching what they have done to gallops but am never afraid to be proven wrong. Fair point Newmarket, but very frustrating that nobody involved in handicapping or programming seems to show any interest in entering into a discussion on how to improve the system. Harness update on HRNZ website lead with story about entry for Jewels being a gold coin donation. If that’s the most significant story they can come up with they shouldn’t bother with podcast. 2Piper 408 Report post Posted April 6, 2019 Also do not programme adequately for all the 2yos that have qualified. Only the best are tried at the races. Other jurisdictions have better handicapping systems than we do, nearly 400 yearlings sold at Sales yet only 31 trotters (colts and fillies ) have races and less than 100 in the pacing ranks
