Auckland Trotting Club

Disaster waiting to happen NM. The CEO seemed more concerned with running a lifestyle village than a racing club.

The industry has seen this as the golden egg that will revitalise racing in Auckland. Remains to be seen whether that eventuates.

lets hope  the selection committee and board do a better job when appointing a new CEO. WE need a person skilled in the industry .please do not appoint an accountant who is not well versed in harness racing. All the hot air of 20000 minimum races is escaping rapidly... The line that we need someone outside the industry for new ideas never works.... I have seen it in many Businesses and have seen it mostly fail over last 72 years !!

Very wise words John. The trouble is half those on the board are never any better.  A classic example is HRNZ, a quick look at Ken Spicer's CV would not leave you with any great confidence that he has the governance experience and or qualifications to run a multi million dollar industry. IMHO

Perhaps the new crew need to have some construction experience. Rumour has it that certain procedures were not carried put in accordance with the  rules. If true they might be in a heap of dung

So you are hearing the same sort of noise as me. If its true heads should roll big time.

Dowding had her main experience in catering, food and beverage etc(George Hotel and Ch Ch Town Hall) so maybe the builders found life too comfortable in the lunch room portacom rather than getting on with the job. Notwithstanding the issues with the engineering that needed rectification, amongst other issues.

Just have to question at times the female tokenism of the PC world where lack of true ability (experience)  translates into poor performance. (Ardern Shipley,Curran, Hughes etc) JM(white, patriarchal) O.  :P

Spot on Chevy. How she ever got that job beats me...hubby had some experience at Addington and that was it.

Canam are now off the job and they are suing for millions. Ganellen are suing for $13m.....this could get very nasty.

Involving Alan Reay ( the bloke who was involved in the CTV building debacle ) and using Chinese steel on the job was a recipe for disaster.

Kind of confirms suspicions, I walk past the site regularly. Seldom do I see much action e.g. from the cranes. They must be in pretty high demand in Auckland right now but just seem to sit still motionless.

The logic always befuddled me. Its the showgrounds, trotting, function and recreational area. Who the hell allowed it to be turned into a residential area.

All the gin swiggers that agreed should also GO.The way I read it was ATC thought they would make 30 mill by doing some of the sign offs themselves which you can but you have to be smarter than the average mouse they are not , sadly it effects all of us, I do feel sorry for those that sold there houses expecting to be in last year now paying high rents what a bugger.

Well done to Newmarket for breaking this story. Heres the latest in today's Herald

Buyers of units in Building A being built by CMP and Building B being built by Ganelon are allowed to escape their contracts which expired in December.

But the club wants to keep the money so it can finish the project next year.

"If the sunset date under your agreement for sale and purchase passed in December 2018, you should be aware that our solicitors have written to yours requesting an extension of that date through to December 2020 preserving headroom over and above the anticipated completion date," a buyers' update out last month said.

Some buyers might want to cancel the contract due to lateness, it acknowledged.

"If you choose this course, Auckland Trotting Club will immediately refund your deposit along with any interest accrued since payment in accordance with your sale and purchase agreement. If you do not wish to cancel your agreement, then the Auckland Trotting Club requests that you support us and grant the extension to the sunset date of December 2020," the update said.

Dominique Dowding, club chief executive, has also resigned for what the business said today were "personal reasons." The board has appointed Rod Croon executive director while it hunts for a permanent replacement, it said.

In 2016, Dowding won a Property Council women in property award for managing the transformation of the raceway's carpark into the new apartment hub.

In December 2014, the Herald reported her predicting occupation of the Green Lane West Rd places by the end of 2016.

Keeping depositors' cash beyond the refund date is not the only trouble the project has struck. Last April, Auckland Council demanded urgent action and issued a "stop work" notice which remained in place for three months.

Dowding said last year that was for "observation, quality assurance and documentation issues with erection of structural steel by the contractors on both buildings A and B".

"The notices were provided to both Auckland Trotting Club and the contractors Ganellen and Canam."

In the latest update, the club said it knew some buyers would be "terribly disappointed" about the new completion date for building A, referring to "performance issues" with previous building Canam, replaced last year by CMP Construction.
