Detectives from Victoria Police’s sports integrity unit have raided the Ballarat and Warrnambool operations of the state’s premier trainer Darren Weir on Wednesday morning.

Rumours of an investigation into the Weir stable have been circulating around racing for months before the police hit the Weir stables.

Police have confirmed they have arrested Weir and two other men and taken in for questioning.

"They will now be interviewed in relation to sporting integrity matters, including obtain financial advantage by deception, engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of event or event contingency, use of corrupt information for betting purposes and attempt to commit indictable finanical offence, namely obtain financial advantage by deception," a Victoria Police statement read.

"A number of items, including a firearm and what is believed to be a conducted engery device were also seized from the properties.

"This investigation remains ongoing and has also been assisted by Racing Victoria."

Weir’s stable sent out a Commonwealth record of 491 winners and won more than $31 million in prizemoney last season.

Racing Victoria has released a statement on the matter. Almost all media organisations have named Weir but RV’s general manager of integrity Jamie Stier says the organisation was not prepared to name the trainer involved.

“Racing Victoria’s Integrity Services team has been conducting an investigation into the activities of licensed persons in the Warrnambool and Ballarat areas. During the course of our investigation we sought the support of Victoria Police’s Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit on the matter, instigating their investigation,” Stier said.

“The Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit this morning executed warrants at properties in Warrnambool and Ballarat where they arrested three licensed persons for questioning. Members of the Racing Victoria Integrity Services team attended licensed stables to assist Victoria Police and to investigate potential offences against the Rules of Racing.

“As the matters are the subject of on-going investigations by Victoria Police and Racing Victoria we are not at liberty at this time to disclose the identities of the persons arrested nor the details of the investigations.

“Racing Victoria is committed to maintaining the highest integrity standards in our sport and, where appropriate, we will continue to work with Victoria Police on those investigations.”

As the matter is ongoing, comments have been turned off on this article.

The latest from Victoria

Under-fire trainer Darren Weir will be able to run his horses in the short-term despite his arrest for questioning by Victoria Police on Wednesday morning.

Weir and two other men were arrested for questioning after detectives from VicPol’s sporting integrity unit raided his Warrnambool and Ballarat stables at about 6am on Wednesday.

Weir has five runners engaged at Wednesday’s Mornington meeting with three of his eight acceptors among the routine scratchings for the meeting.

Weir has nine acceptors for Friday night’s meeting at The Valley and the stable will be able to accept with runners at meetings over the weekend.

Racing Victoria is not in a position to use their power to stand down Weir as he has not been charged with a breach of the Rules of Racing.

A Racing Victoria spokesman was unable to determine whether stewards would charge Weir or any other licenced person at this stage of the investigation, which is being run in conjunction with Victoria Police.

A gun and taser have been seized and three people were arrested after police raids on Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren weir.

Victoria Police and Racing Victoria raided stables at Miners rest and Warrnambool from 6am on Wednesday morning.

Three people have been arrested including a 48-year-old Miners Rest man said to be Darren Weir himself, a 38-year-old Yangery man and a 26-year-old Warrnambool man, Victoria Police said in a statement.

“They will now be interviewed in relation to sporting integrity matters including obtain financial advantage by deception, engaging in conduct that corrupts or would corrupt a betting outcome of event or event contingency, use of corrupt conduct information for betting purposes, and attempt to commit indictable offence namely obtain financial advantage by deception,” it said.

One wonders where all this will end up, not a good luck no matter what the outcome

No “charges” have been laid. Arrests and interviews being conducted. BackPoon, I think you’d be wise not to make accusations such as you allude to in your post - unless you have plenty of money to defend yourself old chap.. just saying.

Mmmmm....... no tasers were found ( three jiggers were though and that’s disappointing  ), they found an unspecified amount of cocaine but it could belong to anybody FFS.

Weir has been released without charge, as has the 26yo man they detained ......

They are the same thing though aren't they....jigger is just a racing term....it's not a good look for the industry and the anti-racing brigade will have a field day with all of this..

'he has been charged with "gaining financial advantage by deception"

'No “charges” have been laid'...so which is it?

Be unusual to be arrested with no charge.-'you are under arrest for...???'

Not unusual at all , plenty arrested not charged two very different parts of the investigation process,if all arrested are charged, there would  be lot of dross in front of courts . Likewise turning over a house don't mean guilt it means an information has been presented to a court and they are happy there are grounds  there to issue a search warrant. A huge number of people work in that stable , and visit and anyone from top to bottom could have had those articles allegedly found  . That's part of process now to investigate . It's all early days yet .

No charges guys - yet. Just investigations following two months of investigation by Racing Vic. They called the Police to assist because the Police have powers the RIU don’t have. There’s no mention of doping at all and the tasers were 3 “Jiggers”, which are a banned item. The gun? Who doesn’t own one on a rural property? Who’s was it? A lot of water to go under the bridge so until then, I believe BackPoon’s comments about tubing should be condemned.

Agree , he's had 1000 plus runners a year I'd guess , many positives ? I haven't heard of many so must run a reasonably tight ship.

I note he bought a horse today at Karaka some can’t be too bothered......and besides there’s ample evidence here in NZ that the boof headed Police raid and arrest first..then think and investigate later

My money is on “no charges”.....

Arrests were by the Fed's and not the keystone cops.Would that make any difference PFP?
