$40m prizemoney boost in Victoria from January 1....

Recommended Posts

Victorian racing will enjoy a $40 million prizemoney boost from January 1 after last month’s state election.

The Andrews government promised $33 million for higher prizemoney if re-elected before voters returned the Labor team for another term last month.

A Racing Victoria cash injection will mean the industry will offer $40 million more in stakes across the next two years.

Racing Victoria announced a sample of the new prizemoney package in October but unveiled the new prizemoney structure on Wednesday. Victorian TAB races will carry a minimum of $22,000 in stakes from January 1.

Below is the new prizemoney structure for Victorian racing.

New minimum prizemoney per race

     Country TAB - Standard

$22,000 (up from $20,000)

     Country TAB - Premium

$35,000 (up from $25,000 to $30,000)

     Country TAB - Night

$35,000 (up from $20,000 to $30,000)

     Metropolitan – Midweek

$50,000 (up from $30,000 to $40,000)

     Metropolitan – Public Holiday

$60,000 (up from $40,000)

     Metropolitan – Saturday standard

$125,000 (up from $100,000)

Metropolitan – Saturday 3YO races and staying races (2000m+)

$135,000 (up from $120,000)

     Metropolitan – Saturday pathway races

$75,000 (up from $60,000)

     Metropolitan – Saturday Listed races

$140,000 (up from $120,000)

Metropolitan – Saturday Group III races

$160,000 (up from $150,000)

“The increases announced today ensure that the minimum prizemoney for every category of Victorian race is the equal of anywhere in the nation,” RV chief executive Giles Thompson.

“They also ensure that Victoria remains the destination to race a stayer or a three-year-old with Saturday metropolitan minimums rising to a record $135,000 for these races.

“As we’ve stated previously, a vibrant and successful thoroughbred racing industry is great for Victoria and enhancing returns to our owners, trainers, jockeys and breeders, particularly at the grass roots, is crucial to that.”

So while the powers that be of NZ Racing and our Minister of Racing dither about with indecision and ineptitude, there is the very incentive for taking a half handy horse to Aussie to chase some real money. What will that do to our upcoming yearling sales? Will there be more sales to Aussies, and if there are, will that leave Kiwis fighting over the lesser lights - which will further reduce the potency of the industry.

I wonder what Winston's pre-sale address will sound like this year.

You’re dead right FTM.

It’s always been state v state in Ozz, across all sports, and it’s by leveraging one state against its neighbour that they’ve attained so many concessions and so much state government support.

Note it’s never federal government support that drives this growth.

Therein lies a major flaw in the Messara model, who can he leverage against in NZ, unless he proposed bringing competition in at the operator level ( instead of outsourcing the operation of our precious assets )

I knew someone would pick up the very point you made, well done you Feds vrs State.

I can see the NZ Messiah version now, the Auckland city council offering minimum stake of 25K for Ellerslie only for Wellington council trumping it with 30K

It won’t be the Wellington council trumping it to 30k, it will be the Upper Hutt City Council as Wayne Guppy is both the Mayor of Upper Hutt and President of the Wellington Racing Club. Come on Auckland, start the stakes race. Lol
