The Shark Bites

They obviously think he’s a good horse. However, they have two options imho. Keep him home and race in NZ for pittance, win a few and enjoy. Or, if they think he’s got the class, send him to a trainer in Sydney/NSW for an Autumn campaign. Waller? If he’s any good, Waller will find out “how good”. If it doesn’t measure up in Oz ( as a few Te Akau “champions” haven’t ), they could take the horse back and get him ready for Hastings 2019 and beyond. But a NZ2000g win is not going to ensure success against the Oz Group horses. It’s another level. If he was mine, he’d be on a plane to Weir, Waller or Hayes.

The guy has done a super job with the horse, the stable has had Australian success before..no need to take it anywhere other than where it is right now...from all accounts he is not the most straightforward horse and the guy is flying at present....no reason to change anything...JMO.

The Shark is learning his craft. It was notable that the extravagant action was not so evident in his last win. I would like to see him race handy and sure he has the cruising speed to do that. If he goes to Sydney be will be up in class and will get beaten if he is ridden like the "best horse in the race." Dont think you need worry at the time he ran. He's the goods alright!

Would be awesome if the Shark turns out to be the real deal cause NZ Racng really needs a hero horse after the Australian Spring they have had.

After Xtravagant led from go and romped home by 8+ lengths in a fast 2000 Guineas time and then destroyed a G1 WFA field by 8+ lengths, Cameron said "He was the best horse he had ridden" and there was plenty of Te Akau hype. The results of Xtravagant's starts in Australia: 8th of 15, 12th of 12 and 12th of 13.

The Shark was beaten fair and square by stablemates Embellish and Age of Fire in the 2017 running of the 2000 Guineas and if we were to frank form across the ditch, both have been uncompetitive in their Australian starts.

Te Akau are a sales and marketing machine; in the business of syndicating and training horses. Hype is great for business! And Ellis is never shy of salesmanship; like when he was telling people that apparently: Gai Waterhouse thought that Rock 'N' Pop was the best stallion prospect to come out of NZ since So You Think!

Sports Bet got The Shark at 15s for Cox Plate, same as Benbatl. Wins average mile handicap in South Island  then 15s for best WFA race in Australia, that's mind boggling . Mind you they have Enable at 6s and she's 1000 to 1 to make the trip. I think she might be trying for a third Arc that month.

Crazy bet, but they put up what they think the punters might nibble at.

50s I might have a nibble for a laugh but that's crumbs WD. Wouldn't surprise me if Winx goes well this Autumn with lack of opposition bar The Autumn Sun or maybe another Euro they might try for five.
