MiDeBo Racing 83 Report post Posted September 25, 2018 Anyone in the know able to explain the idea behind reverse ballots for Saturday racing?? Understand this idea midweek but surely for Saturday racing which is supposed to be perceived as "Premier Racing" you would want to think that the highest rated horses got a start?? Any Thoughts

Why on a prem day as the tracks dry out why would you want to deny the highest rated horses a start ? Understand it’s extreme day but seems abit extreme. Just Looking 44 Report post Posted September 25, 2018 It’s been set up only for the rating 65 races - their explanation was that they had light numbers last year so decided to do reverse ballot. Last year the track was a heavy 10 with the rail out 10 Metres This year a dead 5 and the rail true - this is more a factor in the numbers than the reverse ballot concept But by doing this, with the explanation to improve field size effectively dilute the betting product - not improve it - I can understand doing on a midweek meeting - but ratings are there for a reason. To promote the highest rated horses.
Red Rum 1,833 Report post Posted September 25, 2018 Ireland used to do regular " upside down " handicaps , mainly over sticks . Give bottom rated minimum weight move up then chop off the top . Only in low grade races. Not sure they still do it , panders to poor horses but keeps owners interested . With increases in prizemoney there were too many duffers in training so think it was ten years or so back they set a date then any horse below the threshold rating were gone. The safe reliable jumper normally finds a place later in life plodding round point to points in Ireland or UK .

MiDeBo Racing 83 Report post Posted September 25, 2018 Agree Puha. Next 65 1400 for Saturday stake in CD is 13/10/2018 at Hawera. Don't understand the rationale behind this decision considering rail is true and looking like at this stage the track will come up a 5,6 or 7. Coincidentally the same day at Hawera they have 3 65's (1400, 1600,2100) and two 72's (1200 & 1600) not to mention WFA F&M 1400 which if other years are to go by a mare rated say 72 could potentially sneak into. Applaud TTR and NZTR for thinking outside of the square but to do it on a Saturday seems astonishing to me. Cheers Mike
