departed 155 Report post Posted September 6, 2018 It has come as a huge shock to hear of the passing of former Kiwi jockey Chris Brown in Victoria on Monday. Chris was formerly a south island jumps jockey but had been in Victoria for many years. He had held a picnic jockey license but upgraded to a full jockeys license several seasons ago. Unfortunately Chris's good nature and easy going ways saw him taken advantage of by unscrupulous trainers who used him to ride trackwork but then failed to pay him or give him raceday rides. Chris is rumoured to have been unwell but the fact is he died without a penny to his name and quite unnecessarily and prematurely. Chris was the salt of the earth and a damned decent bloke. We are devastated at what has happened. The Jockeys Association is apparently looking into ways that they can help with funeral costs etc. Gruff, La Zip and hedley 1 1

R.I.P Was that horse called beechers brook, can remember that horse winning down there paying 90s, a long time ago in the days when trackside only broadcast races from one meeting, that day it happened to be a north island one, to this day an old friend still talks about missing out on backing him. ADM 225 Report post Posted September 10, 2018 I am currently reading the Winx book and there is a Chris Brown mentioned in it, is it the same person?
departed 155 Report post Posted September 15, 2018 Chris might have got a mention in the Winx book, he rode the outsider of the field in the Turnbull stakes last year, the race that Winx won. We went to the memorial service for Chris on Thursday at Benalla racecourse and this was spoken of as the highlight of Chris's career, riding in a group 1 at Flemington.
