Guys is that the best yuh got? can you not just feel great that The Champ won it! I take to heart what Yannick said, and that is 'he (Laz) only did what was asked' he won it well! and that's enough for most of us, but invariably there always appears those that just can't abide some else's success.....The Champ won it! and in fine style, get over it!

Hes won the last two NZ Cups over 2 miles by huge margins including the NZ record, Austalasian harness horse of the year, nearly 3 mil in stakes, won 35 out of 45 starts, never further back than 3rd, won Interdominion Final, goes to USA and wins first up against horses that have won 3 mill running 1.48 and people still want to call him average and unexciting. WHAT THE ??

You can never please everybody and that will always be the case with Laz no matter what he does or how he wins. Because hes not an inconsistent Lord Module winning brilliantly from last or a bully like Gammalite, and just goes out and gets the job done often in record times some people always find a reason to be negative. Wether its jealousy,  anti All Stars brigade or they are just negative people it doesnt matter as WE all know he is a champion and WE love watching him race.

On a gorgeous Friday evening (Aug. 10) in which it appeared a presence from above intervened to provide perfect conditions, Lazarus N, the Wonder from Down Under, anointed himself as a true superstar with an impressive 1:48.4 performance in the $325,000 Dan Patch Stakes at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino before a legion of admirers in his first pari-mutuel engagement in the U.S.

“One of the reasons I decided to buy this horse with my brothers was because we are devoutly Catholic,” said Duncan Taylor, whose Taylor Made Farms owns the 6-year-old stallion. “First of all his name is Lazarus which represents a miracle, and his dam’s name is Bethany, which is the location where the resurrection took place. Then Bethany’s sire is Christen Cullen. These factors made it appear as if (purchasing the horse) was meant to be and a gift from god.”

Guided by Yannick Gingras and conditioned by Hall of Famer Jimmy Takter, Lazarus N, a son of Bettor’s Delight, left alertly from his assigned post position nine to settle into second behind fellow New Zealand-bred Bit Of A Legend N before the teletimer posted the first quarter-mile split of :26.1.

Shortly after the two frontrunners glided around the first turn, Gingras brushed the stallion to the lead and the duo hit the half-mile marker in a measured :54.2. As Lazarus N continued to lead the field of nine through to the three-quarter pole in 1:22.4, he placed a bit of separation between himself and his rivals.

As he rounded the final turn, it seemed the horse would pull away in the stretch to post a facile victory. Halfway down the lane, however, Breeders Crown victor Split The House (Brett Miller) mounted a furious rally which drew him nearly alongside Lazarus N.

Proving he already has established a passionate fan base, those in attendance were cheering so loudly for Lazarus N to hit the wire first the words of announcer Steve Cross could scarcely be heard. As the noise of the crowd drowned out all sound, Gingras asked his horse for more. He responded in kind to spurt away from Split The House, as well as a closing McWicked (Brian Sears), to stop the clock in 1:48.4. The stallion paced his last quarter mile in a stellar :26.

“Yannick said this horse only does what you ask of him,” Taylor said. “In Thoroughbred racing we would refer to it as not getting to the bottom of them, but in Lazarus’ case he is just a very relaxed horse. Jimmy (Takter) keeps telling us how intelligent he is and that characteristic definitely a part of why he is a special horse. All I know is he is a blessing.”

He is clearly the best horse NZ has seen in a few decades with a record to prove it. Now he starts his US career with a win in the Dan Patch. Cant ask for more but there will always be knockers, its just how some humans behave

Oh dear Mick, just reading his write up on Lazzies impending race in the Herald, in the first sentence this: ' Before you consider taking the $1.75 price around Lazarus winning his US debut today, consider this one simple word of advice: don't.' buggahhh!!!!!   :D

Cheers Iraklis

ODDS IN THE USA WERE 6/5 WHICH MEANS FOR EVERY $5 BET YOU GET $11 BACK.............. SO $2.20 in our language, more evidence of poor odds here in. Like the NRL where we consistently get about 10% less.

He can run 1:46, Gingras says post Lazarus's US debut win

Trots Media - Michael Guerin

Last Updated 11 Aug 2018

8_10_18-Lazarus-NearWire.jpgThe man enjoying the ride behind Australasian pacing sensation Lazarus says only one horse may be able to stop him becoming the fastest pacer in history.

And that would be Lazarus himself.

Champion driver Yannick Gingras was still buzzing hours after driving Lazarus to a dominant victory in his first North American start, the pair overcoming the outside barrier to lead for the last half of the US$325,000 Dan Patch at Hoosier Park in Indiana on Saturday morning (AEST time).

It was Lazarus’s first start in the United States since being sold for an estimated record price of $4 million to Taylor Made Stallions.

While he had been the best standardbred in Australasia for two years and qualified in sensational time in the US two weeks ago, any horse traveling to the other side of the world to take on their best comes with question marks.

Lazarus turned those into exclamations marks with his 1:48.8 mile.

The win has already justified his purchase price because with North American breeders now seeing how powerful Lazarus is in full flight he is guaranteed a commercial start to a dual hemispehere stallion career.

That leaves the $3.8 million earner with just a couple of major targets that could greatly embellish his reputation — winning at the Breeders Crown in late October and pacing a super fast mile time, close to the world record of 1:46 held by Always B Miki.

But while Gingras says that time may be within Lazraus physical capabilities, the horse himself might need some company.

8_10_18-Lazarus-Group-2-Web(1).jpg“A lot of things need to happen to get down to that speed but I think he can do it,” Gingras said.

“I have no doubt with the improvement he has in him he can pace 1:46 and change, maybe even 1:46 flat.

“But to do that you need the right track, the right conditions and the right horses to push you.

“Tonight he would have gone a lot faster if he had needed to and I think he is a horse who will always find more when another horse gets close to him and pushes him.

“So to pace 1:46 he will need all of those things and a horse good enough to push him to that time. Otherwise I don’t think he is a horse who will want to go much faster than he has to to win.

“But anything is possible because he had only had that one qualifier here before tonight’s race so he is obviously going to get better and better.”

Lazraus’s next starts are likely to be in the heat and final of the Canadian Pacing Derby on August 25 and September 1 and yesterday’s win guarantees him a start in the Hoosier Park Derby on September 21.

After that looms the US$500,000 major free-for-all at the rocket fast Red Mile (October 7) in Kentucky, the ideal track to attempt a lightning quick mile.

“Tonight was the perfect starting point. He won, we got to show people how good he is but he wasn’t put under any strain.”

What was it like driving the champ?

“It is a real thrill. Driving any great horse is amazing but the novelty around him tonight and the way the race was promoted, and knowing so many people Down Under were watching. It was pretty special.”

Air NZ doing cheap tickets to US at moment but might be pushing it to convince her indoors that a trip to Lexington in early October to the Red Mile track would be  a good idea. Its  a great track with great facilities and they run times that you would not think possible.

A $40,000 payment was required to supplement to the Canadian Pacing Derby or Maple Leaf Trot.

"The Wonder from Down Under" Lazarus N will be making his second start on North American soil in the Canadian Pacing Derby. The six-year-old stallion won his U.S. debut on August 10 at Hoosier Park in the $325,000 Dan Patch.

Earlier this year, Lazarus N was purchased by Taylor Made Stallion and brought to North America with eyes on the top races for older pacers and a potential World Record. The son of Bettors Delight, out of Christian Cullen mare Bethany, dominated the racing scene Down Under, winning 35 of 45 starts and earning $2.6 million prior to being purchased.

Lazarus N races for Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Takter.

Dancer Hall has been a breakout star this season at Woodbine Mohawk Park and now the four-year-old will get the opportunity to take on the sport's best in the Maple Leaf Trot.

A son of Deweycheatumnhowe, Dancer Hall has won seven of his last 10 starts heading into the Maple Leaf Trot. His most recent victory was 4 3/4 lengths score in the $75,000 Earl Rowe Invitational on Sunday evening at Georgian Downs. The Paul Reid trainee has been starring in the Woodbine Preferred this summer, having posted four wins and three runner-up finishes in seven Preferred starts.

Dancer Hall is eight for 13 this season with $173,500 earned for owners 1187422 Ontario Inc. of Ottawa. His career numbers currently sit at 16 wins and $273,150 earned.

Lazarus N headlines field of 10 for Canadian Pacing Derby

MILTON, August 21, 2018 – The Canadian debut of Lazarus N will have to wait until Saturday, September 1 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The entry box for this year’s Canadian Pacing Derby closed Tuesday morning with 10 older pacers entered, meaning eliminations will not be necessary this weekend. The star-studded group of 10 advance directly to the $600,000 final on September 1.

‘The Wonder from Down Under’ Lazarus N headlines the field for this year’s Pacing Derby. The New Zealand-bred superstar will be making his second start on North American soil in Canada’s oldest harness racing event.

A six-year-old, Lazarus N was purchased earlier this year by Taylor Made Stallions and brought to North America to race for trainer Jimmy Takter. The son of Bettors Delight exited the Down Under racing scene with 35 wins in 45 starts, over $2.6 million in earnings and numerous awards.

Lazarus N won his North American debut on August 10 at Hoosier Park in the Dan Patch.

While all eyes will be locked on Lazarus N in the Canadian Pacing Derby, the other nine pacers are well-accomplished and will be looking to spoil the party.

Casie Coleman trainee McWicked has been cleaning up in the older pacer division and enters the Pacing Derby with six wins and over $672,000 earned in 10 starts. The seven-year-old champion recently surpassed $3 million in career earnings for owner S S G Stables.

McWicked will be competing in his third Canadian Pacing Derby final. His best finish was a third in last year’s event.

Dave Menary trainee Sintra is back to defend his Pacing Derby title. The five-year-old gelding is just one for eight this season, but his lone victory did come in the $100,000 Mohawk Gold Cup on Pepsi North America Cup night.

Sintra is currently $964 shy of $1 million in career earnings for owners Brad Gray, Michael Guerriero and Menary Racing Inc. His win in last year’s Pacing Derby is currently the richest victory of his career.

Always loaded with talent, trainer Ron Burke, harness racing’s all-time leading trainer, will send out a trio of starters in the Canadian Pacing Derby.

Burke’s triple-threat for the $600,000 event consists of All Bets Off (29 wins, $3.1 million), Filibuster Hanover (12 wins, $1.2 million) and Rockin Ron (33 wins, $1.5 million).

All Bets Off will be racing in his fourth-consecutive Canadian Pacing Derby. The seven-year-old has finished fourth in each of the past two editions.

Rockin Ron will be seeking redemption in this year’s Pacing Derby. The five-year-old won his elimination last year before surrounding the lead in deep stretch and finishing second in the final.

This year’s Canadian Pacing Derby also includes Dr J Hanover, the fastest horse in Canadian harness racing history. The Tony Alagna trained five-year-old set the Canadian record of 1:46.4 last June at Mohawk Park.

Dr J Hanover has enjoyed recent success at the Milton oval, having posted two Preferred victories since July 28.

Mohawk Park fan-favourite Nirvana Seelster is entered to race in his fourth-consecutive Canadian Pacing Derby. The Bill Budd trained seven-year-old finished fourth in last year’s final and enters this year’s edition just over $6,000 away from millionaire status.

Split The House, last year’s Breeders Crown champion, will be making his Pacing Derby debut. The Chris Oakes trained six-year-old is a 13-time winner with more than $760,000 in career earnings.

The field of 10 is completed by Western Fame, the second entrant from the Takter barn. The winner of more than $925,000 lifetime comes into the Pacing Derby off a 1:48.4 upset victory in last Sunday’s Roll With Joe Stakes at Tioga Downs.

Western Fame may not receive the bright lights like stablemate Lazarus, but the five-year-old has quietly scored five victories and earned nearly $200,000 this season.

The field of 10 for this year’s Canadian Pacing Derby has combined for 241 wins and $16,277,077 in earnings.

The $600,000 Canadian Pacing Derby joins the $651,000 Maple Leaf Trot for a stacked card on Saturday, September 1. Post time is 7:10 p.m.

Here is the full field for the Canadian Pacing Derby in alphabetical order.

MacDonald says Lazarus will be world's best

29 August 2018

By Adam Hamilton

LAZARUS’ dominant debut US win certainly didn’t surprise former world champion driver James MacDonald.

In fact, MacDonald is already strongly tipping a repeat dose in the $600,000 Canadian Derby at Woodbine Mohawk on Sunday morning NZ time.

“This race is no harder than last time. I’d expect the same result. He’s drawn better and should be fitter. McWicked would be the danger again if he can get the right trip,” he said.

“Lazarus earnt so much respect last start the way he won. If Yannick wants to press for the front or gets headed and wants to re-take, he’s got that respect now.”

So where will another win this week sit Lazarus on the scale of North America’s best pacers, which is essentially the world’s best?

“These are the best of the best he’s facing this week. There might be a few others here and there, but it won’t get harder than this,” MacDonald said. “If he keeps going the way he is, he will be the best over here.

“The sky is the limit for him knowing Yannick (Gingras, driver) told me he should keep getting better as he gets fitter and adapts more to the style of racing.”

MacDonald’s opinion of Lazarus was in high demand at home given he had the opportunity to watch the megastar win the Perth Inter Dominion in the flesh while he contested some invitational driver races at Gloucester Park last December.

“I told everyone I’d never seen a horse do what he did in that final, sit parked and run past them like he did,” he said.

“I think he was a bit under-estimated when he got here, but not anymore. Not after that first win.

“My only query was how would acclimatise to the shorter speed racing and how fast he could get off the gate, but he answered both those things in that first win.”

Not a bad endorsement
