phil the only reason that maori are in the low income bracket is that they dont stay in school. To many are out comitting the crimes you speak of.The boy who died while out tagging, his mother should be sent to jail for not knowing where her kid was at night,i know where mine are.Maori parents and not all should spend more time with their kids and less in pubs/casino and actually try to raise them. Its a race that has themselves to blame not the white man.before youre a racist bullchit comes out ...guess what my wifes maori and my 4 kids all part maori. 2 at uni,1 in aussie playing league for cowboys and a 6 year old.We were there for them everyday,my wife is hardworking, she moved from kaitaia at 16 to not slip into the cycle, her brothers jail, druggies,no jobs losers, same parents different choices.

I have rarely if ever accused anyone of being racist here. Most statements are made unwittingly because of a superficial knowledge of issues rather than deliberate racism (but there are exceptions).

Likewise I have not at any time argued blame the"white man" but it is an inescapable fact that many issues facing Maoridom have been as a result of colonial policies over many years and they leave a legacy that takes a while to resolve. Also some of thsoe colonial policies were helped by some Maori who were complicit in them and they must share some of the blame for the outcomes.

There are many more non Maori in represented in all the negative stats and groups and low income groups etc. Just their proportion in relation to their share of the population is higher which is why I'm saying it is more than just a Maori problem but you wouldn't think so when you hear and read some of the comments on it.

There are many non Maori in the lower income brackets too and maybe some of their reason are the same you cited but the fact is it isn't just that simple.

Your last comment bears out what I said earlier the majority of Maori are not in the offending category and the majority of low income Maori just like the majority of low income non Maori are not offenders either. But some of the comments at times lose all balance when it comes to this.

We are talking about targeting a very difficult small percentage just as we are with the equivalent non Maori and other groups such as drug and alcohol abusers.

I agree with the above, and Phil, please face facts - the percentages may be low but that does not change the fact that Maori offending is much higher %' age wise than that of any other race, and they can only blame themselves for this, not the rest of NZ or past policies,(regardless of how you have been brainwashed in earlier years),they have had opportunities to better themselves since the settlers arrived here,(especially in more recent times)but many can't be bothered to get off their ar$es and do a honest days work, they appear to be far to interested in promoting their so called "macho, warrior" image they think they have, when actually all of these "misfits" are just lazy, bad bug@ers.

Interesting how anyone who disagrees with you Grahame has been "brainwashed" whatever that really means yet you haven't. Obviously you have found a new definition of brainwashing than that which emerged from the Korean War - maybe one that says if you read widely and make different choices from someone else and think differently then you have been "brainwashed." Sometimes your reactions, arguments and claims run counter to the very regimentation, control and intolerance you claim to abhor.

Unfortunately things are not as easily solved and as simple as you make out. Sure there are quite a few who fit the bill in your description just as there are in other communities too. But there are also many other reasons why some people find themselves in the situation they are in. Some have themselves to blame others don't.

But trying to sort out who has themselves to blame and who doesn't won't help solve the problem. It won't help us put in place programmes and agencies etc and get institutions etc within Maoridom and without to put in place regimes to resolve it not for the so called no hopers you refer to but for current generation of children, the next and future generations.

There is much of in what you say I could find common ground with.

Sheesh, I dunno, Phil, all sorts of unlikely folk are clamouring to agree with me in 2011, ha...

And, earlier today I held open a door for an American lady before, after 10 seconds of waiting for her to decide to take me up on that offer, thinking to myself

Another Maori child beaten to death yet no comments posted on here...is that because we're not surprised by it or are we just apathetic?

Still, I suppose Phil will continue to blame 'ol whitey'.

King, Whale Oil has a good post on this subject:
