THE KING 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2010 ...Hilditch and co are dreaming aren't they with the selection of the left-arm orthodox Beer?? He's taken, I believe, 16 1st class wickets yet gets the nod for this crucial game. I've never seen him bowl but my take on it is that the selectors have well and truly dug a huge hole for themselves by initially dropping Hauritz, and that they feel they can't go back to him now. Hauritz has experience and would, imo, lap this bloke when their test playing abilities are weighed up against each other. The other asset Hauritz brings is some much needed batting ability to help shore up that brittle lower order of Australia. I see Smith has been brought in to replace North, so he'll bat 6 and bowl some leggies...though he'll predominantly be there mainly as a batsman...which is a fairly big ask for a 20yo. You guys could quite easily be 4 for buggar all and you're asking a 20yo to come in and resurrect an innings in an Ashes Test!! Aussie need a leggie and they need a leggie bad! If he's the best leggie you've got, then they should bat him at 8 behind Haddin (where he'll add starch to the tail) and let him develop as a bowler. As I said, I haven't seen anything of Beer and very little of Smith, and I'm not up to play on others that may be knocking on the door, but this batting line-up they've picked isn't going to give the bowlers much to work with. pogo 0 Report post Posted December 11, 2010 I'm familiar with lots of beers BUT i only know what i read about this variety ( 6 shield games.....fair dinkum!! ) Steve Smith was always going to play test cricket from his early Illawong junior & rep days and will succeed with bat and ball, i don't know where he will fit in the order though. We're rooted , enjoy it.
THE TORCH 671 Report post Posted December 16, 2010 Australia 138 - 6. Mark Taylor very exuberant about Johnson getting off the mark with an inside edge and Nicholas forever looking at forlorn positives with Australia. Properispomenon 1 Report post Posted December 16, 2010 I was astonished, King, to read of Punter's 'logic' behind team selection: name no spinner and hope that he won the toss and didn't need one... THE KING 0 Report post Posted December 16, 2010 I was astonished, King, to read of Punter's 'logic' behind team selection: name no spinner and hope that he won the toss and didn't need one... I have seen Labour Party manifestos with clearer thinking! Incredible really. He already has one seamer in Watson, yet he feels the need to select 4 more!! What they should have done is select another specialist batsman to bat at 6, and move Smith down to 8. That would have left 3 seamers to fill 9,10, jack...giving you a 4 seamer/1 spinner bowling attack, and a batting line-up that goes as far down as 9 (Johnson). Even a hawera sightscreen shifter could work that out!!

Peter Ingram and James Franklin anyone???:D Oh a thousand apologies Fisher King. When you wanted Oz in your "loser of the series never posts on here again" wee challenge I just took it as your esteemed way of saying you supported them or thought they would triumph. Again, you were right - I was wrong Go Australia and the Channel 9 team! Optimism, optimism, optimism, Oi Oi Oi!
Dilligaf. 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2010 Go Australia and the Channel 9 team! Optimism, optimism, optimism, Oi Oi Oi! England lost ten wickets for 109 runs, in the process collapsing from 78 for 0 to 187 all out. This aggregate of 109 runs between the second wicket and last wicket is the tenth worst for England against Australia and their worst at Perth. Mitchell Johnson picked up 6 for 38, which is his finest bowling performance against England. It is also his second five wicket haul against them after the 5 for 69 at Leeds in 2009 England have made six scores below 200 at Perth. They have gone on to lose on all five previous occasions. Shooting from the lip again torch? Its not over just yet chap.

Two more wickets and England have a total to chase. Loving the switch in attitude by Healy and Co. They are embarrassing - even to Australians! Good for the series though to have Australia show some ability.

THE TORCH 671 Report post Posted December 17, 2010 Let it go Torch, its' not good for your mental health champ, let alone your pupils. Haha. No seriously its amazing what one type of delivery can do to a whole batting line-up. Johnson has rediscovered "his" weapon (the one that comes back to the right hander) and that could mean the end of free flowing runs for England. Trott, Petersen, and Collingwood will all be ultra cautious if Johnson can keep producing that delivery, but then again which Mitchell Johnson turns up each morning is anyones guess. Bell looked awesome yesterday but I have doubts whether Strauss and Flower will "panic" and put him ahead of Collingwood. Another terrific Ashes contest. You could argue that of the last 4 series (including this one) about 70% of the tests have been pearlers.
