Jen would  be the scariest player in the Comp, in the nicest possible way of course.

Scores either zero or $600+ ...and rarely anything in between.

When you're drawn to play Jen you spend the week wondering which Jen is going to turn up. :D

Unfortunately the captain was still in the gutter after a tough night out last night - figuratively speaking

ROUND 9

Race 10 - Rosehill R9

1st - 6 Quilista W-$4.20

2nd - 3 Sugar Bella Q-$6.40

Scr: 7,8,12,15,16,19

Subs: #3 then #6

3 THE BETZA GRANDS (3rd)

$850.20

2 points

2 THE ROYLE FAMILY (2nd)

$1490.40

2 points

The Betzas stole it in the last with Dave winning his countback against Pam with Hetty Heights (3rd) beating Tulip. Graeme looked like he could have done it with his BB quinella but Quilista had shortened so much he fell $6 short of catching Sharne. Opponents Betty and Pete ended the day with quinellas as did PJ and Robert, the latter adding a BB to take Betza MVP honours. Jen put up one of the all time great individual scores in Super Comps to be the supreme Match Star. The Royles took bonus points for both a team profit and higher aggregate.

167.80 Graeme

173.20 Sharne

179.80 Betty

74.80 Pete

120.80 PJ

1161.20 Jen

55.00 Dave (on countback - see above)

55.00 Pam

326.80 Robert

26.20 Heather

2 THE DARK HORSES* (1st)

$849.40

0 (x 2 Joker play) = 0 points

3 LAY DOWN MISERE (8th)

$1333.40

3 points

The Dark Horses need the longshot of a Faraway Town-Slow Burn quinella in the last and their hopes were raised when they turned for home 2nd and 3rd but both weakened so the Lay Down Miseres held on with a BB quinella from Steve P and a BB from Rees just getting them past the team profit mark to add a much-needed bonus point. The Dark Horses final collects came from a Moose BB and a BB quinella from MVP Sarah. Moose got up to beat John but this was cancelled out by Rees reeling in Rosina. Gordy, with a big tally, was Man of the Match for the Lay Down Miseres. Yet another Joker play went unrewarded in this comp.....

132.00 Korio

481.20 Gordy

88.00 Rosina

110.20 Rees

201.20 Moose

182.20 John

327.80 Sarah

147.20 Tony

91.20 Skelly

412.60 Steve P

1 THE RUBIKS (5th)

$630.20

0 points

4 THE AD AUGUSTAS (4th)

$896.80

3 points

The Rubiks had two great chances to turn the match around in the last but Sugar Bella's 2nd was the closest they got so the AAs progress continues with Casper and Man of the Match Howie making their final collects. Casper in fact sneaked past Roland to extend the Ad Augustas' margin to 4-1 garnering a bonus point. Captain Cubes finally made it on to the scoreboard in the last for the Rubiks for whom Kloppite was MVP.

174.00 Hesi

176.40 Catalano

232.00 Kloppite

58.20 Tom

93.20 Geoff

234.00 Wrinkles

42.00 Cubes

314.00 Howie

89.00 Roland

114.20 Casper

4 MAINLY DOLLARZ (6th)

$672.00

3 points

1 FIVE NO TRUMPS (7th)

$207.60

0 points

The Mainly Dollarz had it won before the last with Man of the Match Richie making their final collect in the form of a quinella. The Five No Trumps had an abysmal day with with just 6 wins from 100 selections, all missing again in the last. Their MVP - Redrum - did not even break $100. The Dollarz took a bonus point for the 4-1 margin.

253.80 Richie

58.20 Ian

87.00 Jack

90.20 Redrum

91.20 The Crucible

The Blackcaps couldn't quite rid themselves of that lowest test score record the other day, but I think the Canes might have lost a record that they've held for some time.  I remember we totalled just over $300 one day and I didn't think anyone could top (or bottom?) that.

Sorry Ian, I know people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, but team LDM are on the rise - at least we can now see the second to bottom team.

The Table after ROUND 9

1st 18 The Dark Horses* $9680.60

2nd 17 The Royle Family $9295.00

3rd 16 Ad Augusta $9491.60

4th 15 Betza Grand $9187.60

5th 14 Mainly Dollarz $9705.20

6th 12 The Rubiks $9489.20

7th 11 Five No Trumps $8960.20

8th 9 Lay Down Misere $8823.00

The Dark Horses remained on top despite a Joker=play that ended in defeat. Their conquerors - the Lay Down Miseres didn't progress but are more in touch with the pack than they were at the start of the day. Wins for the Ad Augustas and Mainly Dollarz saw them gain a place each at the expense of the Betza Grands (who won nevertheless) and Rubiks. The Royle Family held station despite defeat thanks two their two bonus points (OK thanks to Jen !). The Five No Trumps remain in the penultimate position in the table after a loss.

Hard luck 'The Rubiks' ...it looked a couple of hundred metres out in the last that Sugar Bella would lengthen stride for Hesi and deny us Ad Augusta the win we were seeking and expecting.

But in the end Quiista was just far too quick !

Well done team-mates Casper, Tom, Cat and in particular today Wrinkles who turned around a few misses in recent weeks to score a valuable win today seeing off a very tough opponent in Geoff.

Looking generally at the Comp, special mention of TC (The Crucible) who has now gone 9 from 9. In such a tough, even, closely fought competition to go unbeaten through 9 individual  matches is a phenomenal performance. You won't see TC with $1000+ scores or even 500+ scores mostly ...instead TC is a masterful exponent of match-play and no wonder was the first name picked out of the 32 names in the draft.

Special mention also of Sarah, who has gone from strength-to-strength in recent comps and is one of the most difficult players to see off in head-to-heads. A tower of strength for her team 'The Dark Horses.'

Heartiest congratulations PJ on your success with my Golden Slipper Best Bet, Estijaab. What a little beauty this champion is ....bounced from one of the widest gates and gave them all the chance to run her down. They couldn't ! Just too damn good. A memory for you to savour for the ages, PJ. Couldn't happen to a finer fella.

Looking forward in the Super Comp, Five No Trumps have come firmly into the line of sight of us Ad Augusta in terms of a forthcoming Ad Augusta joker play.

6 wins from 100 selections is just the sort of team we want to cosy up to !  We look forward to meeting soon, FNT ! :D

Have a good week everyone.

See you next Saturday ! :)

If anyone is going to stop the streak .......

Jen certainly is certainly capable of doing just that, John, but to my way of thinking the Jen-style of player doesn't generally go back-to-back, they get a big score, then they have two or three misses, then they strike hard again. So I would say that TC's timing is impeccable, and my money's firmly on him to go 10 from 10. It'll take an Ad Augusta to finally topple the champ TC. You can rely on the Double AAs you other assorted outfits ..........we've got this ! :)

Yes this competition is all about timing and a degree of luck. Who you play and more importantly... when.
I am having my worst comp for a while and seem to get the days when the longshotters do their stuff each week.
For the statisticians like professor's John and PJ, take a look at the following.
If I had played TC each each of the nine weeks so far I would be 5:4 ahead. I am betting (but not on yesterday's form) many would be the same.

TC 9-0
1: 152
2: 121
3: 335
4: 331
5: 220
6: 353
7: 329
8: 133
9: 91.2

LastOf40 3-6
1: 216 *
2: 106
3: 443 *
4: 73
5: 287 *
6: 168
7: 157
8: 166 *
9: 93.2 *

Firstly I like the idea of the top 4 fighting out the finals, after two rounds of round robin the top 4 have earned the right to compete for championship honours!

Credit to the comp with the closeness between all teams, all teams have a shot at the top 4, in fact LDM with a successful JP could go from last to first in a week

So basically its going to come down to the Captains call with their JP to enhance their teams chances of being part of the elite 4,

I would imagine all the smart (astute) for a better word CAPTAINS would be saving their ""Joker"" for 5NT, looks like you're going to be one of the smart captains Howie:)

Lastof40, for me the competition is 1/9th skill, 8/9ths luck. This ratio varies dependent on the player.

Despite this large component of luck, there is a relatively close correlation between team totals and team's position on the ladder.
