Winstons big announcement...

Recommended Posts

Let’s be honest....to fix NZ Racing what is needed is a Royal Commission...a bit like the Farquhar Enquiry which pulled the bjelke Pietersen government in Qld apart.  It’s never going to improve until a bit of honesty is applied and self interest is removed. Too small a gene puddle here for independent thinking.  So in reality, it’s never going to change.

I for one are sick of the legal thievery and the constant crap served up by media &  industry leaders that we are supposed to swallow.  And the fawning all over Karaka. I’m over it folks...nothing like a bit of professional competition needed here....wouldn’t be funny if Tattersalls came in here and stirred things up?  Yes, it’s never going to happen...so status quo...

Trump has it covered - sort out the costs over a short period - give them 2 months to present the plan with minimum cost savings of 20% then the Board has to manage and monitor hard and deal firmly with non performance - it is (was) a business - let's fold in basic business tools - targets and performance with positive and negative responses

All very simple

Might be simple but they need to find $20mil a year for starters there to cover what they are currently borrowing to cover the advance stake funding.

Winston is not going to upset the apple cart too much. Think about it' when he's acting PM his salary goes to it's highest level in politics and I bet at the end of this term he will retire on a govt pension for the rest of his life, with free travel and all the perks. He's no different than the rest of them ,his nose will be in the trough and the tax payer will still have to foot the bill. This seems to be the main purpose most are in politics, last three terms and ones future is set.Beats the standard pension.

mate, ive been in winstons camp for 30 years, i no a thing or two about him and jones, he wont get me again sorry, hes already on a pention, and rorting that for god sake, hes now with racing portfolio again hes on a more of a pention, this guys is a perk specialist, make no mistake, take a look at the grin sitting at the sales.he will take advantage of anything that comes his way, sorry mate, cant go with this guy any longer.

Winston doesn’t need to give the industry money, he only needs to give NZTR a great big kick up the arse.

What we need firstly a fucking strategy document with some attainable goals, a five, ten, fifteen, and twenty year plan for the industry.

Secondly we need tools to use our assets to facilitate point one, as a code we’re so wealthy, but we’ve got no money because the morons at NZTR waste everything on stakes.

You are correct, but I don't see Peters doing it. He won't be around after the next election so why should he care what happens five, ten years down the track ? He will be living the life of Riley on his fat pension, with his biggest worry being which Malt to drink....

One thing Winston Peters could do is "tell" NZTR to stick their head office on a racetrack viz Ellerslie particularly if Ellerslie is going to have redevelopment of its track.

NZ racing needs to be more international. Dealing with internationals far easier when the head office is just down the road from the airport, yearling sales, the majority of the population and horse related enterprises

Yeh sure, Ellerslie kicked out the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders,  .

Is that what your beloved National were proposing!  NO?

Anything will be better than what they did for the last nine years, so don't try and create something that has no hope of being announced.

I voted Labor/NZ 1st...2nd last election in the hope Winnie could sort racing...the prick went with National

Then this election I thought fuck Winnie and just went Labor / Labor...Brilliant result...coalition..

.Now hope fence sitting Winnie can come good and make a positive difference for the racing Industry.

Higher Stakes is surely the main issue to address, considering the costs now involved in racing a horse

( when lucky enough to strike an un-abandoned meeting)

When the NZRB built at Petone they wanted all codes to operate from there.

HRNZ refused to shift or even have representation in the building.

No benefit in NZTR now moving from where they are.

Not too sure about that. The building was built for the TAB. The Racing Board was a much smaller entity in those days.

One of his first statements was there is no major announcement and then proceeded to reiterate a select number of his racing policies pre negotiations with Labour.

He ended by asking buyers to dig deeper into there pockets as change for the good was coming......I am an optimist so my fingers are still crossed.

Meanwhile that little girl waits a little longer....

Winston put it down to fake news scenario.  Many will see it (given the build up) as a bit of a damp squib.  But I'll give my take on it for those who didn't see it:

Only real steer was Govt investment in one (and not necessarily only one ....) all weather tracks - and some tax changes. Made reference to the abandonments and the costs to the participants (didn't mention the loss to the Govt's take with those abandonments - which it occurs to me - must be one of the biggest losers when they occur!).

As per tax - he made specific reference to how currently buying a yearling does not currently qualify that buyer as running a breeding operation (presumably with the accompanying tax benefits) - but more or less said that this is to change.

(Funny really - couldn't help thinking - is the buyer of a colt at yearling sales which is brought home and gelded 2 weeks later (as plenty are) REALLY running a breeding operation?)

Anyway - that was about it from my point of view - oh and the comment along the lines that winning a country race used to pay the bills for that horse for the year but no more - so prize money had to rise.  Oh and that the industry had to come up with its own innovation and ideas to make things better rather than stagnant or going backwards.

Interested to hear what others took from Winston's speech.

Why would you want to dig deeper into your pockets when chances are when you do get your expensive yearling to the races someone will spit on the track and the meeting will be off.

At the risk of attracting attacks from the Winston fans - I don't think overall that his speech set a very inspiring note for the start of the sales ...

Downplayed all the expectations.....described as "fake news"......

Wants to look at tax relief of some sort, hopefully in time for the May Budget.....no details

Thinks an all weather track ( Waikato likely destination ) would be good....no further details

All in all, underwhelming......

Reminded me a bit of those pictures of the sumptuous burger you are going to order from McDonalds and you pull up to the drive-through window full of hope and expectation - and then you open up that little box when you get home and it's a poor and somewhat floppy imitation of what you thought you were goin to get ....

Maybe Winston is right though - the build-up to "the big announcement" was false.   So maybe we all deserve our disappointment ..... satisfaction is generally inversely proportional to expectation afterall ...

Yes I do, based on what he promised last time in government (with Labour), and what he did.

If he can only get 20% of the NZ First Racing Policy (see Hesi’s posting above) past his coalition partners it will make a positive difference.

Not long to wait now, as come the weekend we will find out one way or the other.

On another subject, I note that your posting was done 11 hours ago, yet it only showed up now.

whats your take on the announcement now insider

Here's an example of innovation and ideas Winnie the Poo. Put a blow torch to NZRB/NZTR . Many say that the organisation has overseen the complete deterioration of the NZ Racing landscape. Take Breeders and Sales out and only sellers have had a return. The games stuffed in NZ and all he comes up with, despite all the "Policy Rubbish" of MZ First, is "Racing has to be innovative and have more ideas!". Did he say this "before" he entered the Pencarrow Marque or after lunch and a few Sav Blancs? He's had months in Office and had the perfect chance and audience to announce what he and his "Govt by Stealth" were going to do over the next 12 months. Or, should I say he did announce what they were going to do? SFA. Nothing. Plenty of room in Oz for the progressive young trainers and stable staff of NZ Racing. Follow the exodus.

How do you think the government would lose money from abandonments?
