puha 2,177 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 Dad scratched before they abandoned , he walked the track this morning after the gallops and said once it’s wet it’s a disgrace. It’s not just a case of weather, the track just isn’t up to scratch to handle it. Where the new turf is around the bend 3 of the riders that galloped this morn reported their horses slipping which if they’re slipping in a track gallop just imagine under Raceday pressure! Some parts of the track there were big holes where the horses were going into the ground then other patches they were only bruising it, inconsistent footing. They also run the agrivator through before scratching time which should have been disclosed to trainers and wasn’t. Trainers association does need to take a stand and ask some serious questions of the NZTR and the goverment but that will never happen without unity. von Smallhaussen 3,226 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 from stuff website Saturday's Marton meeting abandoned due to unsafe track WARWICK SMITH/STUFF The Marton meeting at Awapuni is the sixth thoroughbred meeting to be abandoned this year. Saturday's Marton Jockey Club meeting at Awapuni has been abandoned due to the state of the track. It becomes the sixth thoroughbred meeting to be abandoned in as many days in 2018. The storm that lashed much of the North Island over the last 48 hours has seen between 40-50mm rainfall on the Awapuni track. I wonder if Awapuni, Otaki and Trentham would even exist if horsemen ran Racing ? ( Before you attack me Liz there’s a good half dozen up this way that shouldn’t be raced on either.) Meantime the one track in the region that all experienced horsemen favour, the weather proof and incredibly safe Foxton, lies idle. It’s bizarre. Just for interest P4P - was that comment made before or after the bend was "re-done" a few years back?

Insider 3,876 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 Well I wont be betting there. After putting through the ground hog this morning, half the horses now wont let down properly, that's for sure. It will be too shifty for them. The results will be all over the place, you wait and see. THE TORCH
jess 1,244 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 From NZTR: The meeting today could not proceed after the track received more than 40 ml of rain in the past 48 hours. The track had been inspected this morning by a Turf specialist and with good drying conditions today and tomorrow we are comfortable with racing on the track tomorrow - Sunday 7 January "Comfortable". Interesting the club (or it's PR ppl?) are using this word. Was an old favourite of John Key's - usually when commenting on something the masses were (rightly) freaking out about! Good old John calmed the rising hysteria by assuring us all he was "comfortable". Always amused me ... My understanding is that the horses galloped this morning were far from "comfortable" around the bend. Anyway - perhaps it will be a case of "what a difference a day makes" ..... here's hoping. jess 1,244 Report post Posted January 5, 2018 2 minutes ago, poundforpound said: Read the RIU v. Kevin William Morton. This issue was central to the unsuccessful prosecution of Morton. At the time certain RIU wouldn’t officiate at Awapuni under certain conditions and Morton went public about it, he was charged after NZTR took offence to him telling the truth, he proved NZTR and the Manawatu club had lied, and they commenced the ( failed ) rebuild soon after. Thanks for the response P4P. My observation of the world - of racing and beyond: one word, from which so much flows: INTEGRITY. That said, I'm not confident that NZTR would know and report the difference. I fail to see how either would make the track more shifty. Their long term use should have the opposite effect by relieving compaction and encouraging aeration and the development of a deeper more secure root system. So Insider, by all means don't bet there because the track is rooted, or perhaps not rooted, as the case may be, but don't worry about the machinery used on it the week before. The same person who gave evidence that there were no known issues with the Awapuni track at the KWM hearing, then orchestrated the provision of half the funding to RACE to reconstruct the top bend immediately afterwards. gubellini 3,923 Report post Posted January 6, 2018 Memo John Allen. If you are still on holiday get your backside into your office on Monday morning. Immediately call an emergency phone conference between key racing stakeholders. The only agenda item will be how to without delay plan for a Synthetic Track in the North and one in the CD. The time for prevarication is over. No cliches and platitudes. ACTION is needed now. Time to justify your salary. P.S. the Staff at my nearest TAB despite being screwed down to near the minimum wage know more about racing than you ever will!
